Hopkins Activity Center News & Notes

And the Artwork Winner is

...the lucky Mr. Hubert V., whose name was drawn to take home the lovely handmade leaded glass art piece. Thank you to the many eager participants who contributed to the drawing for this one of a kind piece, made by Men's Shed member Dave.

Funds from the Artwork drawing directly benefit the Men's Shed group. It is a social group for retired men looking to stay connected and contribute to their community in volunteer service. Find out how the Men's Shed is making their mark with volunteer projects in the community of Hopkins on their website. Or visit the calendar for weekly offsite events or gatherings.

Beauty in Volunteering

Making a Difference

Along with the Men's Shed group, many other volunteers from the Activity have been keeping busy knitting and sewing blankets, creating coloring pages, and more! Find out ways that you can share your creative endeavors with the community through volunteer projects

This past week, volunteer items were delivered to the Hopkins Police Department, ICA Foodshelf, and Bethesda Thrift Shop. And in the mail we received a thank you note from a local hospital in appreciation for the volunteers who made walker bags.

“Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in”. ~Author Unknown

A Magic Trick

Try This Challenge!

Stand next to a wall with one side of your body touching it. Place your ankle, knee, hip, shoulder, and head against the wall. Now try to lift your other foot off the ground without moving away from the wall.

Here's the trick: You can't lift your outside foot unless you move your head and shoulder away from the wall. So the secret is not really magic, but science! By moving your head and shoulder, you redistribute your weight and the force of gravity then allows you to lift the outside foot.

Thanks to one of our readers, Avery, for sharing this fun trick!

Final Quarantine Question

This week closes out our Quarantine Question of the Week series. We hope this has given you some thought provoking questions to reflect on during the past weeks as we examine our life from an entirely new perspective following COVID19.

As many of the volunteers who have served in ways that benefit the community and enrich the lives of others, think about the following Quarantine Question for yourself:

What BEAUTY am I either creating, cultivating, or inviting in today?

Maybe you are a very artistic person? Perhaps you are a good cook, and share this gift with others? Beauty comes in a variety of forms, be it showing kindness, spreading love, making someone laugh, or creating something of beauty.

Share with us how you are creating, cultivating or inviting in beauty! Email us at activitycenter@hopkinsmn.com, or click on our social media links below to share on Facebook or Twitter.
