The pound started the week on solid ground; it was an average of 1.6% firmer against the major currencies compared with a month ago and holding steady against the euro. Despite Brexit once again returning to headlines as talks resumed, early in the week sterling made surprise gains, strengthening by an average of 0.6% and adding one US cent and half a euro cent.
