How to set up an ERG for black and ethnic minority employees

Employee networks or employee resource groups (ERGs), representing different and specific groups from diverse communities, can help offer an inclusive environment in which everyone in an organisation feels like they belong. ERGs can also provide a safe channel through which black and ethnic minority employees are able to express their voice and share their experiences with a sense that these experiences will be understood, heard, listened to and responded to without judgement or condescension, and with genuine concern and care by those who are more likely to have experienced similar issues and challenges themselves (both in and outside the workplace). At the time, Curtis, a Black woman, was vying for a post as an associate creative director at R/GA Austin, but was never given the role. Curtis says she raised several concerns over how she felt she wasn't being paid fairly but those concerns were disregarded, which she alleges is due to a culture of racism at the agency. Curtis says she raised concerns with leadership and human resources but she says she was brushed off. In performance reviews written by her white manager, which were shared with Ad Age, Curtis was criticized for being "overly ambitious." Read More
Time to take real action this Diversity and Inclusion Week

There has been a welcome increase in awareness through the #IAM, #BlackLivesMatter #TimesUp and #MeToo campaigns, but awareness does not equal action. To create impactful change, firms must make significant cultural changes, and that starts at the top. The lack of real, measurable results by investment managers demonstrates where diversity and inclusion sit in terms of importance. Read More

Diversity without inclusivity is just skin deep

Heritage Month is that one month a year when all South Africans celebrate how diverse we are as a culture and question how much of this diversity is reflected in our industries, companies, leadership and society at large. Often that is where the conversation ends. With diversity – instead of focusing on inclusion, where transformation really starts. Read More

EU Action Plan Against Racism: strong push on Member States to act better against racism
Hats off for #blacklivesMatter protesters demanding equality for all in Europe. They created a political force that lead to an #EUActionPlan to address structural racism. We at ENAR are eager to support in strengthening it and be key stakeholders in the implementation. #SOTEU2020

The EU Action Plan Against Racism published today by the European Commission is the first time that there is high-level recognition at European Union level of the need to fight structural racism. It strongly urges Member States to have better policies against racism and report regularly about it, and considers adoption of new legislation on racism in law enforcement.

The plan could be stronger on measures to address racist and disproportionate policing, as it plays a key role in maintaining and fostering racial inequalities in Europe. There should be more focus on collecting data disaggregated by racial or ethnic origin on profiling. It is also problematic that profiling is presented as a legitimate practice, given the numerous abuses of this law enforcement tool. Solutions proposed include good practice guidance and training, but this should go further and include strong accountability measures. It is also disappointing that the plan does not include specific measures to tackle the structural racism and barriers faced by migrants in Europe.

“We count on the EU institutions and national governments to be drivers of positive change to ensure we achieve justice and equality for all. ENAR and the broader anti-racist movement will remain vigilant to ensure these goals lead to real action”, said Karen Taylor.

COVID-19 and race: supporting employees

As the impact and effects of the coronavirus pandemic continue to emerge, there has been evidence to show that one group the disease has a disproportionate impact on are people from ethnic minority backgrounds.

While the Public Health England review into the risks and outcomes shows that older age, ethnicity, male sex and geographical area are associated with the risk of getting the infection, experiencing more severe symptoms and higher rates of death, the recommendations are focused predominantly on health services and the community rather than workplace guidance. Elsewhere in the UK, the Welsh Government has produced a report from its BAME steering group, which contains recommendations on the security of employment and income and a risk assessment tool for BAME front line health and care workers. In Scotland, the Government has convened a new expert group to provide a clearer picture of the impact on minority ethnic communities of coronavirus (COVID-19). Read the guide
