All choirs on stage with guest artist Sherryl Sewepagaham for the final number!
Stories concert, Winspear Centre, March 8, 2020.

It might be a long time before we're performing like this again BUT....

we have some exciting plans for the fall!

We Will Have Choir!

If a choir is only about singing and performing
- there will be no choir for a while.

If choir is about:
teaching and learning
growing
connecting
community
cultural exploration and transmission
innovating
- we will find a way to have choir.

~ Kellie Walsh (Honourary Patron, 2020)

This coming fall, we will have choir. It may not be quite the same (what facet of our lives is?), but it will provide us all with a dose of normalcy, of community, and of music. This fall we’ll do our utmost to provide the mental and physical benefits of choral music while respecting the importance of our health and families. We also hope to gradually transition back toward in-person rehearsals and performances, provided the evolving situation permits.

And so, as we reach optimistically ahead toward a post-COVID future, we’re also thrilled to share the plans we have in place for this fall.

Tamariki and Kikimasu (ages 5-12)

For our younger choirs, we’re offering weekly virtual gatherings to promote vocal development, musical literacy, confidence, and creativity. Membership will include a personal music-making kit.

For Tamariki (ages 7-9 & 5-6 year-olds welcome with parental involvement!), we’re thrilled to welcome Amy Voyer as our virtual instructor (check out Amy’s amazing YouTube channel here).
Sign up anytime on our web site.

Kikimasu’s (ages 9-12) vibrant conductor Carmen So (plus online accompanist Vicky Berg) likewise has exciting plans to keep her choristers engaged and excited, including two or three virtual choir experiences.  Make an audition video for Ms. So by August 26.

Shumayela (ages 12-16)

In addition to Shumayela’s weekly virtual gatherings, conductor Kim Denis (with support from Tova Olson) plans to host monthly in-person sessions to sing safely in smaller groups. Singers will receive small-group vocal instruction either in-person (in a very safe environment!) or online. This combination will continue the choir’s vocal and technical growth while maintaining its close-knit group identity.
The next auditions take place September 8!

Kokopelli (ages 14-24)

Kokopelli, our flagship youth choir has innovative plans for the coming season under Artistic Director Scott Leithead and Associate Conductor Kitbielle Pasagui. Along with Òran, Kokopelli looks forward working with some amazing artists with the Bridge Choral Collective. This cross-Canada choral collaboration will connect our choirs with colleagues coast to coast, with guest artists every month, and with educational opportunities from post-secondary institutions. Kokopelli will gather online twice weekly, and in-person twice monthly, with the goal of an outdoor springtime concert with our adult choirs or some other capstone event.
Sign up for an audition September 4!

Our adult choirs (ages 20 and up)

Our three adult choirs (Òran, Vacilando, and ChandraTala) will gather in a variety of ways: virtual weekly meetings, monthly in-person rehearsals, and small-group virtual vocal coaching sessions. (Òran will also join Kokopelli in the Bridge Choral Collective.) Again, the choirs hope to prepare for an outdoor spring concert. Check out their choir pages to audition for Òran or Vacilando on August 26 or ChandraTala on September 2.

QUESTIONS ABOUT CHOIR?
Kokopelli and Òran will be participating in this new cross-Canada initiative in the fall.  They will work with luminaries of the choral world.  Did you know YOU too could participate in this initiative?  You can join one of the partner choirs to participate fully, or join in with your school/community choir in the open workshops.  For educators and conductors, Bridge will also be running some PD sessions.
Check out the website for more info!

The Kokopelli adult choirs held a successful wine raffle in July in parnership with Vines Riverbend Wine Merchants.  We sold 99 bottles of wine, with Vines kicking in the 100th bottle to make the math easy for us!

Congratulations to the winners, Laurie G, Megan W and Amanda W who got 50, 30 and 20 bottles of wine to make their quarantine summer patio evenings all the better! Thanks to one of Kokopelli's wonderful accompanists, Tyson Kerr for his lovely and appropriately-themed tunes which enhanced our livestream draw!

Donate to Kokopelli Choirs

Kokopelli is very thankful for the support received from private donors, subscribers, businesses, advertisers, and our funding agencies.  Since we have no tickets for sale this fall, consider making a donation to help sustain the organization through Covid-19. You can choose where your funds will be directed - to artistic needs, bursaries, commissions and even our new Bridge Collective Project. You can find our Canada Helps link below.
