THIRD SHIFT 2020 IS HERE!

THIRD SHIFT is a contemporary art festival presented by Third Space, a not-for-profit artist-run centre in Saint John, New Brunswick, that includes temporary installations, interventions, performances, projections, and events. Rather than the usual one night event, this year’s festival spans from August 21 to 28, with an emphasis on the presentation of contemporary artworks online and temporary installations throughout Uptown Saint John.

As a platform for new experiences and communal exchange, THIRD SHIFT aims to offer Saint John citizens and visitors to the city a unique opportunity to engage with contemporary art and re-imagine urban space. THIRD SHIFT 2020
August 21 to 28 | Third Space
THIRD SHIFT is a festival of public contemporary artworks presented by Third Space, a not-for-profit artist-run centre in Saint John, New Brunswick. Established in 2015, THIRD SHIFT aims to offer citizens a unique opportunity to engage with contemporary art and re-imagine their city. THIRD SHIFT holds space for new experiences and communal exchange through the exhibition of temporary installations, interventions, performances and projections in the heart of Uptown Saint John. THIRD SHIFT 2020 will now put an emphasis on the presentation of contemporary artworks online and the installation of longer-term site-specific projects throughout the Greater Saint John area. FIN STREAM: ATLANTIC
INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

September 17 to 24 | FIN
FIN Stream is the Atlantic International Film Festival's way of bringing the festival to movie lovers throughout Atlantic Canada via the internet. Join them for 114 films in 53 screenings, along with Q&As and panel discussions. This year’s online Gala Presentations lineup features one Gala screening at 7 p.m. AT each night of the festival. Gala screenings will be available for a 24-hour period, starting at 7 p.m. AT, and lasting until 6:59 p.m. the next day. Outside of those Gala screenings, a ticket or a pass gives you access to FIN Stream films at any time during the eight days of the Festival! The Fiddlehead

The Fiddlehead: Atlantic Canada's International Literary Journal is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Along with publishing a special fifth issue, they are hosting free online events featuring live readings from many of the authors who contributed to the anniversary issue. Over the final months of 2020, the series will highlight writers from across the country as they tour through the issue, beginning on the east coast and moving west. THE 2019 CROSS-CULTURAL CREATION RESIDENCY EXHIBIT ON TOUR
Until September 6 | Galerie Bernard Jean
The Galerie Bernard Jean in Caraquet presents the 2019 Cross-Cultural Creation Residency Exhibit, featuring work by Nicole Haché, Tara Francis, and Indigo Poirier. The Acadian Association of Professional Artists of New Brunswick (AAAPNB), ArtsLink, and Mawi’art teamed up last year to create a cross-cultural residency between an Acadian artist, an Anglophone artist, and an Indigenous artist. Through this residency, artists had the opportunity to create new work while immersing themselves in the artistic process of fellow artists. SUNBURY SHORES PRESENT: JUNCTURES
August 28 to September 26 | Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Centre
Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Centre is proud to present Junctures, a group show featuring some of New Brunswick's finest crafters, including Steve Jones, I Chun Jenkins, Maja Padrov, and Ralph Simpson. A woodworker, a ceramist, a basket maker, and a paper weaver have worked together to produce four new pieces and four collaborative pieces for their show, Junctures. All of the work is finely crafted of clay, wood, plant fibre, and paper. By combining their creative momentum, they have built an exhibition that demonstrates their skills in a celebration of a collaborative effort for the promotion of fine craft in New Brunswick. FLOURISH FESTIVAL 2020
September 3 to 13 | FLOURISH
FLOURISH Festival 2020 may look different, but the feeling of discovery, exploration, and connection is still strong. Instead of the usual four-day festival, FLOURISH will be held from September 3 to 13 with digital performances, social media takeovers, studio sessions, radio shows, screenings, public art, murals, workshops, zine exchanges, and so much more! ALL projects and programming are offered totally free of charge. In a year where so many events have been cancelled, FLOURISH hopes to bring some colour and light to 2020. EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL 2020
September 12 and 13 | Saint John Arts Centre
SJAC is thrilled to once again play host to the Saint John Early Music Festival, with the theme this year of ‘Bohemian Masters’, featuring a great lineup of four concerts. To view the lineup and purchase tickets for the shows, click here.
ART FROM THE ATLANTIC BUBBLE
August 14 to September 5 | Gallery 78
Art from the Atlantic Bubble features landscapes and scenes from all seasons, specifically within the Atlantic Canadian provinces. Artists such as Matthew Collins, Peter Di Gesu, Christopher Harding, Glenn Hall, Christine Koch, Victoria Moon Joyce, David McKay, Jonathan MacDonald, Stephen May, Steven Rhude, and Robert Rutherford are celebrating the raw and inspiring beauty you can find just a car ride away. This exhibit will open alongside Amber Leger’s Natural Perspectives, showcasing recent work from this spring and summer, focusing on soft moments of figures and still life objects, bathed in a gentle, glowing light. TOUJOURS MONCTON FOREVER
August 14 to September 30 | Imago
Imago presents Toujours Moncton Forever, a poster project with twelve artists from the community; Alisa Arsenault, Jennifer Bélanger, Jean-Denis Boudreau, Marjolaine Bourgeois, Christine Comeau, Angèle Cormier, Carole Deveau, Frédéric Gayer, Patrick McFarlane, Blake Morin, Annie France Noël and Angie Richard. Artists had access to a collection of images archived at the Resurgo Museum to create their works inspired by the City of Moncton. The posters will be displayed at various locations around the city and the complete collection of posters will be on view on the Imago gallery wall on the first floor of the Aberdeen Cultural Center. SPACE, PLACE, HOME
August 15 to October 18 | Galerie d’Art Louise-et-Reuben-Cohen
The Galerie d’Art Louise-et-Reuben-Cohen will open with a new exhibition titled Space, Place, Home, a project organized by 3E Collective. The exhibition presents the work of nine artists who have a connection to the Atlantic region and whose research addresses the fluid ideas of space and place. The participating artists are Rudi Aker, Léopold L. Foulem, Séamus Gallagher, Hailey Guzik, Denis Lanteigne, Meagan Musseau, Reiko Pleau, Serge V. Richard, and Lisa Theriault. SUNBURY SHORES PRESENT: REFLECTIONS
August 28 to September 26 | Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Centre
Reflections is a show with ten abstract paintings made with Mexico’s red cochineal dye and oil paint. This body of work aims to communicate the visual sensation of space in a geometric composition that reflects the identity of the space. Fabiola Martinez is inspired by the old architectural structures around the world and recreates the mist of Saint John Harbour for the atmosphere. She sees these historical structures as witnessing time and cultural development and uses her art to focus on the symbolic representation of these buildings. Sculpture Proposals for Odell Park White Pine
Deadline: August 31, 2020

The City of Fredericton requests design proposals for a sculpture to be carved in-situ from a white pine tree in Odell Park; a stump of approximately 3 metres high by 2 metres in diameter at its root collar. Several larger limbs remain attached as well. The tree should be sculpted this fall to allow optimal temperatures so that a preservative treatment can be applied and prevent further deterioration of the wood. Interested artists, artist collectives and sculptors currently living in New Brunswick should reply with their design concept, sketch, a timeline for sculpting the piece, treatment process, and a resume outlining past relevant experience. The budget for this sculptural project is $7,500 and includes artist materials, equipment, and application of preservative treatment. For more information, click here.

Career Development Program
Deadline: September 1, 2020
artsnb's Career Development program is designed to recognize and encourage arts professionals who have demonstrated exceptional artistic talent and potential, and who are pursuing a career in the arts. The program is divided into four components: the Arts by Invitation component, for assistance to present work by invitation in established art events; the Artist in Residence component, for assistance for participation in residency opportunities of three months and less; the Professional Development component, for assistance for professional development scholarships for studies and mentorships;  and the Professionalization and Promotion component, designed to assist artists to produce tools related to the promotion of the artist’s work and career. Town of Shediac Public Art Project
Deadline: September 9, 2020
The Town of Shediac wishes to incorporate public art into its downtown core through a work of art. This declaration of interest is open to professional artists and consists of adding elements, dimensions, and colour to the town of Shediac. The selection committee will give preference to artists from Shediac or artists from outside the region who will be working with a local artist. The budget for this project is $5,000. The artist can choose where the work of art will be displayed within the boundaries of the municipality. The artwork’s theme will reflect the town of Shediac. For more information, click here.

Equinox Program for Indigenous Artists
Deadline: September 15, 2020
The Equinox program aims to support Indigenous artists, curators and groups to engage in artistic creation and professional development. Eligible projects can range from research and development for the creation of new works to activities that support and strengthen the Indigenous arts community. The program provides flexible, short-term support to individual Indigenous artists or collectives applying on behalf of small or large groups, arts groups, organizations, community groups, independent arts administrators, and artistic and cultural mediators. Grant funds may be used for organizational development and professional development that will have a positive impact on building the arts ecosystem in Indigenous communities. Artist Residency with the Port of Saint John and the Saint John Arts Centre

Port Saint John and SJAC are excited to announce a new biennial professional artist residency for 2020-2021. The residency will include unique access to the Port as a means to inspire a new body of work, culminating in an exhibit in their newly-named Port Saint John Gallery in September of 2021. The successful applicant will receive a $4000 stipend for the development of a body of work, plus a $2000 CARFAC exhibit fee. For more information and to apply, click here.

Submit Your Horror Film to the Online Demonic Brilliance Film Festival

Presented by Creeker Films in collaboration with the NB Film Co-op, the Demonic Brilliance Film Festival (DBFF) is a three-day online celebration of horror, showcasing some of the most sinister horror films from around the world and the people who make them. DBFF welcomes filmmakers’ who understand the importance of good acting, stellar lighting, appealing cinematography, and detailed production design. Printing Classes at the Saint John Arts Centre
Deadline: Before classes start
The Saint John Arts Centre is offering two new printing classes in the coming months, and registration for these is now open. The first class is “Intro to Linocut” with artists Nathan Cann. This introduction to linoleum block printmaking is a four-week course where students will be designing, carving, and printing their own linocut prints. The class is suitable for beginners and experienced printmakers alike, and all the supplies are included. To register for this $120 class that runs every Thursday evening from September 10 to October 1, click here. The second class is “Copperplate Etching” with Nathan Carr, a fun but thorough two-day workshop. Students will be learning techniques for how to prepare, etch, and finish the plate, transfer drawings, and pull prints. All supplies are included. The Andrew & Laura McCain Art Gallery 2021 Call for Exhibition Proposals

The Andrew & Laura McCain Art Gallery invites emerging, mid-career and senior professional artists to submit their qualifications for consideration for an exhibition during the 2021-2023 exhibition seasons. The Gallery is pleased to receive proposals from community groups, cultural groups, guilds, artists/craftspeople and curators for exhibitions in the coming seasons. Juried, curated and travelling exhibitions are eligible. The Gallery pays CARFAC fees to professional exhibiting artists in solo or small group shows (up to 3 artists). The Incubator Project is a fantastic opportunity provided by the Imperial Theatre in Saint John. Local artists can have access to their space, professional equipment, and highly skilled technical and arts administration staff, all at no charge.
