Back to Basics - Our Services

It's September. traditionally time for back to school. In this spirit, here is a series of reminders of our basic services, starting with A, Article Requests and Archives.

Article Requests - Have a citation or a link, but you just can't access the full text? Simply email library@sandiegozoo.org or use our request form on The Insider> Resources > Library.  We'll obtain a copy through our reciprocal agreements with other libraries.

Archives -  Since the Zoological Society of San Diego's founding in 1916, zoo leaders and staff have preserved a wide variety of documents and memorabilia to record the society's history and shed light on over one hundred years of development.

The collection continues to grow and is generally organized and described at the collection level.  Archives research is quite different from general library and literature research, and staff is here to help!

Closure Notice

Please note Library Services will be unstaffed Tuesday, September 8 - Sunday, September 13.

The physical library will not be open on our usual Tuesday and Thursday schedule, and remote services will be unavailable until Monday, September 14.

Black faces, white spaces : reimagining the relationship of African Americans to the great outdoors

By Carolyn Finney (2014)

Why are African Americans so underrepresented when it comes to interest in nature, outdoor recreation, and environmentalism? In this thought-provoking study, Carolyn Finney looks beyond the discourse of the environmental justice movement to examine how the natural environment has been understood, commodified, and represented by both white and black Americans. Bridging the fields of environmental history, cultural studies, critical race studies, and geography, Finney argues that the legacies of slavery, Jim Crow, and racial violence have shaped cultural understandings of the "great outdoors" and determined who should and can have access to natural spaces. —Publisher.
