HISTORY FOR everyone.

The Cowboy and the Law
North Dakota History, Vol. 46, No. 4, Summer/Fall 1979

Cowboys, in from a long drive, bellied up to a drinkin' bar to leer at gals splendid in spangles or dirty as a littered cantina floor. A rider could be arrested for swimming naked in a river or stream, drinking too much, fighting, wearing a concealed weapon or even carrying one openly, illegal gambling, throwing loaded dice, or firing a weapon.

Outlaw cowboys held up stagecoaches, robbed the mails, blasted bank safes, stole cattle and horses, and otherwise made themselves candidates for wanted posters. Discover cowboys of the wild west and the lawmen who worked to tame them in this article from North Dakota History.

Surveying the Museum Collecting Survey

To help us get an idea of what the people of North Dakota would most like to be collected and preserved from their childhood and beyond, the Historical Society began an online survey in February to gather suggestions from lifetime, current, and past North Dakotans, as well as visitors to the state.
If you wish to participate, take the survey.

We have received many great responses since the survey launched. In this blog post, Collections Assistant Elise Dukart shares some of what we have learned so far. Brace yourself for nostalgia including Barbies, bell-bottoms, bikes, and boomboxes.

Help Identify Members of this Band

The North Dakota State Archives photograph collection contains more than one million images relating to North Dakota, dating from 1865 to the present. Not all of these images are identified…but you can help!

This picture of the Mott Concert Band was taken in May 1910. While we have information about this photo, there is still information to be gathered. Find out what we know and get a closer view of the photo.

Can you help identify any of the members of this band? If so, contact us at archives@nd.gov.
