Welcome to the 2020-21 School Year!

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Just as last year didn't end the way we planned, this year is beginning in a strange new way. We welcome the families of 6th graders. We hope your transition to Julian is as smooth as possible under remote circumstances.

TODAY is the day of the Virtual Meet the Teacher calls. Check out the schedule here.

OVER THE SUMMER, Your PTO Executive Board was very active. In May and June we partnered with D97 and the teachers during the search for a new principal. We are pleased to formally welcome Mr. Christian to the school community. It goes without saying that he has demonstrated enthusiasm as he begins in this new role. We held meetings with Mr. Christian as well as district representatives in July as the many decisions were being made about the school year. In August we have fully tapped our new Basecamp communication site as we teamed up to purchase new shirts for the 6th graders and brainstormed how PTO funds can be used this year.

PTO LUNCH PROGRAM ON HOLD: Speaking of which.... as you may be aware the PTO Friday Lunch program was the primary source of fundraising for the school. That program is presently on hold. We have quite a bit of reserves in the bank thanks to prior years and will make use of some of those funds to support teachers and families and contribute what we can to helping ensure a successful, positive, community-engaging remote learning process. Stay tuned for further details and please plan to join us for our virtual meetings in September and November (more details below).

Also below, we created these printable sheets to help you make sense of which days are A or B days and how to interpret the schedule by grade.  This newsletter will typically come out on Sunday evenings. While the content will be quite different than in years past, we hope it remains a helpful resource to help parents and guardians remain "in the know" for all things Julian. For today, we are trying to keep the information focused on what you need to start school successfully on September 1st.

P.S. Masks are "in" - but so are SCHOOL SUPPLIES! Did you know there is indeed a school supply list for the school year? Check out the school supply lists now so you have time to compile things with your remote learner before Tuesday!

KEY DATES
Are you confused about what's happening when? Hopefully this list will help make sense of the next few upcoming events.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 27: Virtual Meet the Teachers Calls (by grade)
This is when students will be able to meet their teachers and school staff and administrators. Click here to access the zoom links for the calls. At 4:30 pm all students will meet the staff and administrators. 6th graders meet teachers from 5-5:45 pm, 7th graders from 6-6:45 pm and 8th graders from 7-7:45 pm. Again, check the zoom schedule for specific links for your child's team.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 28: Students Can Login to Canvas as Desired
It's not a bad idea for your students to begin familiarizing themselves with Canvas. Even if they have used it previously, students now need to know how to access the specific zoom link for each class. Check out this video explaining how to do this.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 29: Materials Pickup at Julian (by grade)
Student learning materials for all grades must be picked up at Julian Middle School on Saturday, August 29 according to the times specified below. **If there are multiple Julian students in your family, please plan to come during your OLDEST student's designated time.**

6th Grade
9:00am - 10:00am Student’s Last Name starting with letters A - L
10:00am - 11:00am Student’s Last Name starting with letters M - Z

7th Grade
11:00am - 12:00pm Student’s Last Name starting with letters A - L
12:00pm - 1:00pm Student’s Last Name starting with letters M - Z

8th Grade
1:00pm - 2:00pm Student’s Last Name starting with letters A - L
2:00pm - 3:00pm Student’s Last Name starting with letters M - Z

To help the process run smoothly, please follow these steps:
  • Before you arrive, please write the student’s grade, last name and first name on a sheet of paper
  • Parents/Guardians will drive into the staff parking lot off of Ridgeland Avenue during your student’s scheduled time.
  • Please wear a mask and stay inside your vehicle.
  • Hold up your sign so that the staff member can read it.
  • Staff will deliver a bag to your car with the various class materials for your student.

A vs B and September Calendar
Are you totally confused by the A and B days? Here is the full list of A and B dates for the school year provided by the school. Would you rather have it in calendar format? Check out our printable September calendar with the A and B dates shown. Does the daily schedule make you want to pull your hair out? Check out our printable A and B Day Schedule by Grade.

Here's the gist:
  • Class periods are all 1 hour and 20 minutes long. This will include a 10 minute screen break and a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning - that is, real-time with the teacher vs. time doing work alone or in small groups via zoom. Follow this link to find D97 summer presentations outlining more details about a typical class.
  • Lunch will be combined with Advisory, presumably 40 minutes for each. (We don't yet have this breakdown).
  • On A Days, students will attend periods 1,2,3,7. Also on A Days, all grades have their lunch break at the same time: 11:40 am - 12:20 pm. Presumably this means Advisory is from 12:20 - 1 pm.
  • On B Days, students will attend periods 8, 4, 5, 6, and 9. On B Days, because during in-person school each grade had a lunch hour during a different numbered period (4, 5 or 6), they had to get creative (and confusing!). On your student's schedule, 6th graders have lunch as 4th period, 7th graders have it as 5th period and 8th graders have it as 6th period. So, if you have a 6th grader, they will take a break and have advisory during the 4th period timeslot (10:20-11:40) whereas if you have an 8th grader, their lunch/advisory break comes from 1-2:20 pm while they have had their 4th and 5th period classes during the other two grades' lunch breaks.
  • Again, check out printable September calendar to keep the A and B days straight and check out our printable A and B Day Schedule by Grade so your student knows what's happening each of those days.
