 We are excited to announce St Albans Solar Streets: a cost effective new community solar project – district-wide across St Albans, Harpenden and villages – for all home-owners and businesses to get discounted solar installations:
- For example, a 12-panel 4 kW system installation for £4,000. You can get fewer or more panels;
- Any house or business in the district can apply;
- A community fund donation of £50 for each installation goes to pay for solar power for a local community project;
- If 6 or more houses on one street get the installation, the community fund rises to £75 per installation – talk to your neighbours now!
As part of their Net Zero Action Plan, St Albans City & District Council are working in partnership with photo-voltaic installer IDDEA Ltd. to help homeowners and businesses install discounted solar panels.
Solar Streets launches formally on 4 September.

 Leave your car at home!
Monday 14 September, 7.30 - 9.00 pm - online event via Zoom
Would you like to leave your car at home more? Are you interested in more sustainable transport?
Come and join us for an evening discussing how we reduce our reliance on the car and move to more sustainable modes.
How can we improve the street network to encourage more people to walk and cycle? What are the things that hinder this; how can we change them? Wat can we, personally, do?
Of course, not everyone can walk any distance or cycle (although e-bikes are helping with that), so what about local public transport?

 St Albans Sustainable Market
Thanks to everyone who came and enjoyed our special St Albans Sustainable Market on 23 August. It was a grand success, with over 30 stalls and well over a thousand people enjoying the day. We hope you like the photos: here are a few, there are more at the end of the newsletter.

Our new volunteer Ali Hood, has been helping us to update our website – the work is still in progress – but if you haven’t had a look yet, please go and see. We welcome any comments you have about the new look!
Wanted: Trustees and Volunteers!
The formal charity has just half a dozen trustees but has many more volunteers who get stuff done.
Trustees: As a charity we need some more trustees to come and join our trustee board, where we keep an eye on funding, think about new projects, support our volunteers, and do admin tasks such as update policies, organise AGMs and awaydays to keep the charity ticking over nicely. The trustees also help make projects happen, as we dont have paid staff at the moment. We meet monthly with some emails in between. Maybe you have some skills or experience to help us with this? Then please get in touch!
Volunteers: All sorts of people act as volunteers - some help out with the ‘events’ sub-group; some put their name forward to help with events or market stalls; others come forward with their own new ideas and get projects going themselves! We don't have any volunteer training as such, but we do love people with bright ideas and some commitment to take them forward! Please get in touch if you’d like to help!

Thermal Imaging Camera - school case study
Ever wondered how the Thermal Imaging Camera works?
Check out the latest case study: Sandringham school borrowed the Sustainable St Albans thermal imaging camera during International Science Week in March..
They aimed to show the pupils the variation in energy efficiency of different buildings, and what happens in heated rooms with windows and doors left open, compared to when these are closed. Barry Lee, their teacher, said the pupils “were literally blown away by what they could see”.
