Nelson Nature Fix

18 September 2020

Welcome to the Nelson Nature Fix - a regular snippet about Nelson's natural environment, and what we can do to look after it.  If you know anyone who you think might enjoy getting a regular nature fix, please pass this on and encourage them to sign up. You can read back issues here.

Sign up for the Great Kererū Count and get a free native tree seedling from Nelson Nature.

The annual Great Kererū Count starts today! Between 18 and 27 September is when we ask the public to get outside, observe and count any kererū they see and record them on the Great Kererū Count website. Research shows that by spending time out in nature, you’ll boost your own health and wellbeing too.

To celebrate, Nelson Nature is giving away free native tree seedlings to plant in your garden. All you need to do is go to shape.nelson.govt.nz/great-kereru-count and sign up - and we'll tell you how to pick up your tree during the Great Kererū Count.

It's Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori language week). To celebrate, Predator Free NZ has created a fun pātaitai (quiz) to test your knowledge. Click on the kaka to give it  a try!

Restoring the biodiversity of Maitai and Roding Water Reserves

Nelson Nature’s annual pest control operation to protect the forests in the Maitai and Roding water reserves will take place from 28 September – 9 October this year.

The operation is designed to maintain deer and goat numbers at low levels over a long time-frame so the forest has a chance to recover and regenerate. Read more about the programme here
