Mama Zooms, by Jane Cowen-Fletcher
Talk and read about motion in physical science in this lovely story of a child zooming around with his mom, who uses a wheelchair.
My Friend Isabel, by Eliza Woloson
The boy in this book is talking about his friend Isabel, who has Down syndrome. He talks about how she is different than he is and also about how she is the same. Although not explicitly a "STEM" book, opportunities abound to talk about comparing (math and science - observation; attributes), height (math - measurement), types of movement (physical science), and texture words, like soft (physical science).
Anywhere Farm, by Phyllis Root
This book is all about planting and growing anywhere (life science), even in a spot that doesn't look like it could support a garden. Although not focused on CWD, there is a character in the book who is in a wheelchair. It's great to include more books that represent the wonderful diversity of the children in our classrooms and in our world. What conversations could we have with children with disabilities and exploring science?
