Heaven’s Heroes – Are You One of Them?

Whom do you think the Lord calls a hero?  Would you ever think of yourself as a hero?  I believe the Lord’s definition of a hero is different than who we typically think of and actually include many of YOU!

What if the Lord’s heroes are the ones “doing business until He comes” (what Jesus told us to do between his first and second coming, Luke 19 in the parable of the minas).  What if in every day life, we engage our hearts, multiply our skills, learn and stretch and grow, and this brings Him pleasure?  Could this actually be true?

The news does not highlight this reality and some of my friends I believe have gotten off-track in this season, forgetting this one key thing the Lord gave us to do.  The idea of socialism now sounds romantic and if left purely in the academic realm seems like a cure-all for modern problems.   Working a job or starting a business definitely does not sound very grand against this backdrop.

However… do you realize how working a job or raising a family can actually be the Lord’s highest training ground for us as believers?  Did you know this is how we learn life skills?  I talk about this is my first book, Marketplace Christianity.  Here is an excerpt: “There’s a certain set of abilities people need to succeed in any arena of life. I call them life skills and they include the ability to work well with people, maintain a good work ethic, solve problems, be diligent, preserve, follow through, resolve conflict, communicate, manage people, manage projects, have confidence, be teachable, motivate others, recruit, plan, make decisions and exercise good judgment.”  Wow!  That is a hefty list of skills we can gain in the marketplace.

I have read the articles of the evils of capitalism and the greed associated with it.  Surely there are businesses that may fall into that category.  But overall I don’t believe this to be the case.  Today I was reminded of local KC friends who started businesses (actually right as COVID was starting) and I’ve watched them launch, then morph and figure out how to best serve people during this season.  There is no greed involved, only lots of effort to make a place to serve their community.  I see other friends going to their jobs every day – office managers, car salesmen, finance bankers, and moms raising their kids – learning all the above skills to better their companies and families, and bring the Kingdom by bringing His ways in.

These are the heroes.  The ones who get up again and say yes and preserve and serve and learn and grow and make mistakes and encounter stress.  The ones who get tired, the ones who have to wait sometimes to see the fruit of their labors.  YOU are the heroes.

So as an encouragement for today, if you have a job, own a business, have a family, or attend school, you can be advancing and growing the talents the Lord gave you.  Press in and do whatever you are doing with your whole heart as unto the Lord (Col 3:23).  Do you know what your reward is going to be?  Leadership over cities!  Wow!  Read Luke 19.  This is the Lord’s response to what we are doing day upon day.

Be encouraged that you are in your own personal training ground and the Lord is molding amazing things into your life. He is making Himself known in and through you.  So here’s to you, my friends and my heroes.

All my blessings, Bob
