Little Ship Club of Canterbury

The Little Ship Club of Canterbury is a branch of Naval Point Club Lyttelton. We are a fun group of sailors, who gather on a regular basis to discuss articles of interest, listen to key note speakers and organising events both on and off the water related to our common involvement with the sea and those who sail on it. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in any of our events and activities.
Check out our
website and like our Facebook page to be kept up to date with everything going on

Kia Ora everyone,

A quick reminder regarding our session TOMORROW NIGHT we've got Anders Gillies talking about his and Riot's adventures in Stewart Island. Andy has sailed down both solo and with crew a number of times and has some brilliant stories of the places he has explored along the way. Join us Thursday 24 September at Naval Point. Bar open from 7pm talk starts at 7.30.
All welcome! Bring your friends.

I've had a fabulous weekend sailing in the Waikawa Women's Regatta. Team High Voltage got 6th on Handicap with 24 boats in the regatta, there were lots of fabulous Canterbury women sailors up there sailing on various boats too. It is always a great event. Perhaps you can join us next year!

We've got a new group on Facebook for people doing some on-water cruising. Simply post online if you are going out for a sail and fancy some company, perhaps a raft up in Diamond Harbour? or if you are doing a trip up the coast and are looking for crew? You can join the group here for some more info: Lyttelton Cruisers Group

I have added heaps of keen new crew members to the crew list. If you are heading out for a sail why not take some along for the ride! Check them out here and get in quick before they are all snapped up!

If you are sailing up the coast or looking for crew for a longer trip, both the crew and the skipper should do some due diligence before you set sail. We have had an issue with this in the past and it is prudent to know what you are getting yourself in for! Read more here

Keen to learn some skills for single handing and getting in and out of the marina? Watch this space for a hands on session coming up soon.

Thanks also to all our new and re-subscribing members who paid up last month. It is great to get your support of the club. We don't send out membership invoices so just rely on your annual $20 donation to help cover things like gifts for our speakers, a donation to NPCL for use of the wardroom and our other small expenses. If you'd like to join the bank account details can be found later in the newsletter.
We are looking for some speakers or topics for later in the year. If you have something you'd love to hear about or know of someone who'd have a great story to share. please let me know! And if you haven't paid a sub yet for this financial year, we'd really appreciate your $20 to help us buy some small gifts for our speakers and assist with the club's running expenses. The bank account details are below.

See you in a couple of weeks time!

Cheers

Sailing to Rakiura Stewart Island
Join us on Thursday 24 September (note change of date from previously advertised) at Naval Point.

Anders Gillies has sailed to Stewart Island a number of times and has got some great tips on places to visit and how to go about it. Andy tells a great yarn. This is bound to be a good night.

Bar open from 7pm, talk starts at 7.30.
All welcome! Bring your friends.

Checking your LifeJacket
Before you head out sailing this summer its worth giving all your safety gear a once over to make sure that things like your flares are in date, that your VHF radio works (call Maritime radio on Channel 16 and they will let you know), that your fire extinguishers look ok, no corrosion - give them a bit of a shake up. Have you got a bucket on board (great for bailing and dousing flames), bungs beside all your seacocks, is your anchor warp securely attached to the boat? Also now is a great time to service your lifejackets, and throw out any old kapok ones. Find out how here

If you're looking for company on the water - join the group online here.

This is a great way to connect with other local sailors who are heading out. Go on adventures around the Peninsula, do some mid-week sailing, look for crew or boats to sail on, have raft-ups, explore interesting places and much more. Join in the fun and lets get out on the water a bit more this summer.

Looking for Crew?
We have recently updated the crew list on our website. There are heaps of people out there who are keen to get some more sailing experience and give you a hand on the water and learn more about boating in general. Let us know if you are looking for crew or are keen to join the list. More info here: Little Ship Club Crew List

French Farm Visitors Mooring

The Akaroa Cruisers’ Group has now established a Guest Mooring it at the extreme south-easterly corner of the French Farm mooring field, in Akaroa harbour. It differs from moorings usually found in the harbour, being specifically designed for comparatively short-term occupation by visiting vessels, usually when the crew is living aboard.
This mooring is available to Group members (on a ‘donations’ basis), to casual visitors and to those who have booked through
www.moorings4u.com – this in reverse order of priority. The website has precise locational details. A ‘tag’ on the pick-up buoy of the mooring will provide contact numbers – those who want to use it – and haven’t booked – should check availability by calling one of the numbers shown.
We have established some rules of use – see the website for particulars. these may well change as we see how things pan out. The most important thing to remember (for the time being) is that no part of the mooring is to be secured on board – vessels are to secure to the protected loop at the top of the main buoy using their own lines; 4m maximum from buoy to system-head fitting. Use of French farm Aquatic Club facilities must be arranged separately with that club – contact details can be found on the clubhouse notice-board near the road entrance.
The Group has been able to provide this mooring through the generosity and hard work of a surprisingly large number of its members and supporters. The continuous existence of this facility will of course depend on both patronage and user contributions. The Group hopes that it will be seen as useful by those cruising the Peninsula.
