At a national level, hydro storage has remained below the tenth percentile since late June. However, the immediate risk to security of supply remains low due to thermal generation availability and declining risk curves from now until summer.
Over the past week national hydro storage has decreased by two percentage points to 64% of the historical average for this time of year. South Island hydro storage remained unchanged at 67% of average. North Island hydro storage decreased by nine points to 47% of average, with below average inflows for last week.
Consistent with relatively steady and low levels of South Island hydro storage since the beginning of September, Waitaki hydro generation has been noticeably down compared to levels seen in August. Southward HVDC flows, often an indicator of South Island water conservation, have also started to increase over the past two weeks.
Nationally, weekly electricity demand rose by 1% to 819 GWh.
