UPDATE: GUNNISON VALLEYWIDE POWER OUTAGE, GUNNISON, Colo.
-Gunnison County continues to experience valleywide power outages. The
City of Gunnison Electric crew, Gunnison County Electric Association (GCEA), and an electric crew from Delta are working to restore power. The five crews are beginning to make progress; however, they are facing challenges with numerous broken and snapped power poles throughout the valley. In some areas, the City is having to completely rebuild the main power distribution
line. Additionally, the City of Gunnison and GCEA, by law, must have new pole locations identified by a certified locator prior to making repairs. The locator arrived in Gunnison this afternoon and started work immediately.

As hard as the electric and clean-up crews are working to address these issues, please begin to prepare for another night without power. Gather candles, headlamps, blankets, water, food, games, and other necessities for the evening. If you and others in your household cannot manage the night without power, please reach out to friends or family members for assistance.

You can also try the local hotels to see if they have space available. For a list of Gunnison area lodging options, see http://www.gunnisonchamber.com/list/ql/lodging-travel-14.

The majority of the Central Business District is unaffected by the power outages. Restaurants and shops are generally open for business.

There is also a communal emergency shelter set up at the Fred Field Building, 275 S. Spruce. The Fred Field Building is a large space with a good ventilation system to maintain airflow. If you need to use the shelter, call 970-641-7631.

Please remember if you need to leave your residence to take shelter elsewhere, be sure to bring your own mask or face covering, bedding,
medications and personal hygiene items. Continue to wash your hands and practice social distancing as best you can. Sorry, pets are not allowed at the shelter. The shelter has available cots, running water, and bathrooms. Again, bring your own bedding.

It is a good idea to allow water to dip through your pipes to prevent freezing and do not use your gas oven for heat.

If you have an emergency, call 911. For non-emergency calls, inquiries, or questions about the emergency shelter, please contact the Emergency Operations Center at 970-641-7607. If you are in need of assistance or are a member of the vulnerable population, please call the EOC at 970-641-7607.
