a bit of homeschooling encouragement, from our family to yours

"Forget about what's happened; don't keep going over old history.
19 Be alert, be present. I'm about to do something brand-new. It's bursting out! Don't you see it? There it is! I'm making a road through the desert, rivers in the badlands. "

Isaiah 43:18-19, The Message

Welcome back! Welcome back to school, welcome back to A Blessed Heritage, and welcome to whatever is your experience with family and education during these times. Whether you are a returning subscriber and veteran homeschooler, a new homeschooler, or a parent who is looking for help as you navigate the virtual learning experience, we welcome you. It has been a long summer since our last newsletter and we are excited to be back and sharing with you once again.

Like many, we have had a summer of a general mixed sense of dread and anticipation as we strive to create some sort of normalcy in a situation that is anything but normal. We have moved through life debating each turn: should we go here? How do we keep ourselves safe while there? Is this a good move for us right now? And of course, somewhere in the midst of all of this, we have been steadily, if cautiously, planning for our daughter's senior year of high school.

As always, we will share happenings around our home and family because we know that these days are challenging for everyone. Like you, we are a family working our hardest to create a life for our children that includes a love of God, a love of others, and a love of self. Here, we talk about our life as a family in order that you might be encouraged and inspired. We believe God for the new things coming--in our daughter's life as a near high school graduate, and in our family's life as we approach a new season. We want to clear the way for the new thing that God is about to do. I hope you will stick around and journey with us.

Thank you to those of you who purchased volume 1 of "This Far by Faith," our middle school curriculum. I am aware that this book, The Tainos: The People Who Welcomed Columbus, published in 1992, is becoming increasingly more difficult for some to find. I would suggest Better World Books, or even borrowing via WorldCat. If those sources are unavailable to you, there is an alternate book which will perhaps become a part of the revised version, Before Columbus: The Americas of 1491 by Charles Mann. It is not my current first choice, but serves students well in understanding the Americas before this land was "discovered."

We will release a revised version of the first volume in 2021. Until that time, if there are any resources that are difficult to find, please let us know. Our Blessed Heritage community is very resourceful and willing to share best practices as needed.

We are pleased and proud to kick off the 2020-2021 editions of A Blessed Heritage newsletter with a giveaway! For the many new and nearly-new homeschoolers, we are offering one autographed copy of Nicole Green's new book, Homeschool 101: Chart the Course, Enjoy the Journey!

Nicole writes, "What is homeschooling? What will it truly require of me? How will it change my life? As a powerful and prolific voice in the homeschooling community, Nicole Kennedy Green answers these questions and more with insightful wisdom and humor as she captures and defines the essence of homeschooling. After years of teaching these principles in workshops, Nicole has now published them a book that serves as an essential tool for every parent embarking on the journey of homeschooling. Moreover, this book is a timeless reminder to veteran homeschoolers of the purpose and beauty of homeschooling. Homeschooling 101 moves beyond the mechanics to capture the fundamental heart of homeschooling. This wonderful resource will be one of the most useful tools in your homeschool educational toolbox."

To enter the drawing for this book, please send a note entitled "Entering the Nicole Green book drawing," or something similar, to belinda.bullard@blessedheritage.com (no text necessary) . All entries must be submitted by midnight, Sunday, September 13th. Only the winner of the drawing will be notified.
