Origin Story

Alison NovakEver wondered how Kids VT came to exist in its current form? Cathy Resmer shares our publication's origin story in the September editor's note. "In January of 1994, Kim Kropf and Tracey Shamberger founded Kids VT, Vermont's free monthly parenting magazine. Susan Holson took over for Shamberger in 2007. In 2010, Kropf and Holson decided to sell this publication, which they called their 'baby,'" Resmer writes. "Ten years ago this summer, a broker approached the ownership team of Seven Days to ask if we'd like to buy it." And the rest, as they say, is history. Read the full editor's note here

Why Are Routine Childhood Vaccines So Important Right Now?

"Vaccinations prevent serious diseases and literally save lives. Health-wise, children are faring well with the coronavirus pandemic, and we don't want to see unnecessary illnesses and deaths because we became lax on routine vaccinations. I can't emphasize enough how important it is that we keep vaccination rates at or above 95 percent, which is where we were in 2019," says Dr. Lewis First in this month's "Checkup" column.

Instead, there will be no school this week and remote-only classes all of next week due to elevated levels of hazardous chemicals in one of the school  buildings.

"One could write a book about why shopping local is so important. National shopping websites don’t employ any local people, nor do they give back to our vital nonprofit organizations," said Michael Desanto of Phoenix Books. Take a break from the big guys and support local first. Visit the Register, brought to you by Seven Days, for all the info on area shopkeepers who are selling their products online for local delivery or curbside pickup. The Name 'Karen' Is Dropping in Popularity in the U.S.

"While we can’t know for sure if the pejorative 'Karen' meme is the cause of the name’s drop in popularity, it seems likely that the growing association of the name with middle-aged white women who demand to speak to store managers ― and with white privilege and white supremacy generally ― can only contribute to the pattern of decline."

The Pandemic Has Researchers Worried About Teen Suicide

"Data collection for several studies on teen mental health during the pandemic is currently underway. And experts worry those studies will show a spike in suicide, because young people are increasingly cut off from peers and caring adults, because their futures are uncertain and because they are spending more time at home, where they are most likely to have access to lethal weapons."

Welcome to Chopped: Toddler Dinner Hour

"Judge Reese is livid that the dino nuggets were served in the traditional fashion — quartered to avoid choking hazards — and is now insisting they be put back together. In addition, she is picking all the peas off her plate in protest of the purple bowl."
