Our bat population needs your help

TREC has just started working on a project to monitor bats, educate ourselves and our supporters about bats, and work on aiding their recovery from White Nose Syndrome - and we need your help.

There are bats to be found in our watershed, but in order to help them we first need to find them. If you see a bat, you can report the sighting at 1-833-434-2287 and if you would like to record the sighting using your cellphone, please use either the iNaturalist or PEI Nature Tracker app.

We will be undertaking surveys which will consist of us driving roads while recording bats, and setting up recording equipment at known hibernation sites. Then we will build bat boxes, have events to bring residents up to speed on what can be done to help bats recover, and start on some projects to help increase the bat population.

Some bats do hibernate on PEI, mainly in old abandoned hand-built wells like the one in the picture. If you know of any sites where bats hibernate for the winter, we would love to know so that we can set up an acoustic monitor. You can call me on 902-388-1919 or e-mail director@troutriverec.ca

Thanks!
