Returning to In-Person Worship: Staying Safe and Well

St. Luke's first in-person worship service, with restrictions and safety precautions, will be next Sunday, September 20th, 2020 at 10 a.m.

Pre- registration is requred. If you've not yet indicated that you will attend, you can do that by contacting Helen Cathcart (familylibrarian@yahoo.ca)

What will in-person worship be like?

We hope the information below will be helpful as you consider in-person worship in September!

Before you arrive:

•The number of people is limited to 50 (including clergy and other participants). Only people who have pre-registered  will be permitted entry to the service. (See above)

•Bring your own mask. If you don’t have a mask, or forget it, disposable masks will be available at the entrance to the church.

•In order to help ensure the health and safety of everyone who comes to our service, the church building will be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized before and after each service.

•Before you attend a service, please screen yourself for COVID-19 symptoms. If you feel unwell or are in a high-risk group, please stay home.

•All prayer books, hymn books and soft furnishings will have been removed.

•When you register you’ll be asked to provide your name, and your telephone number or e-mail address. We are required to collect this information to help with contact tracing in case someone is later found to have COVID-19.

When you arrive:

•Please arrive in advance of the service, entering via the Bell Street door, unless you require the elevator. In that case, please make your way to the Somerset door. Greeters will be at both doors, and you will sign-in at a registration table.

•You will be asked if you have any COVID-19 symptoms or have been exposed to anyone who is ill in the last 14 days. If you have, you will not be admitted to the service.

•There will be hand sanitizer dispensers at the entrance of the church. You’ll be asked to sanitize your hands on entering the church.

•Please sit in one of the designated places. Chairs will be set up in appropriately distanced groupings according to social “bubbles” indicated at registration time.

During the service:

•Physical distancing must will be maintained at all times. There must be no touching at any point before, during or after the service.

•An offering plate will be available as you enter the church but it will not be passed during the service. We encourage on-line donations as a safe way to make your offering.

•The congregation is not permitted to sing.

•Only the priest will administer the Eucharist. She will sanitize her hands several times both before and after the distribution of communion, which will be by wafers only.

After the service:

•Following the organ postlude, the sidespeople will indicate the flow of people to exit through the Somerset door, starting at the back of the church, keeping aware of physical distancing. There will be no coffee hour or receiving line.

•Only the upstairs washroom (through the “Green Room”) will be open. The rest of the building remains closed.
•To keep everyone safe and healthy, you are asked not to gather in the building before or after the service and to maintain physical distancing at all times.

•Links to online services will continue to be offered in the newsletter.

Today's Music

Prelude:   Andante   (by Jan Albert van Eijken)

Hymn 381:  Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven  (Tune: Praise, My Soul)

Postlude:   Fantasia in E Minor   (by John Stainer)

Jan Albert van Eijken (1823-1868) was a Dutch organist who studied at the Leipzig Conservatory (which was founded by Mendelssohn). The Andante is from his (first) Sonata in C minor which he dedicated to his teacher, Johann Schneider.

Sir John Goss was organist of St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, from 1838-72.  The hymn Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven (CP 381) dates from 1868 and the text is based on Psalm 103, the appointed psalm for today. Unlike most hymns, Goss provided different accompaniments for each verse of Praise, My Soul; each reflective of the text.  In June 1869 it was reviewed in The Musical TimesIn days like the present, when composers of hymn tunes are so numerous and prolific, it is as difficult to attempt to assign any definite place to a composition of this description.  Yet we cannot refrain from saying that in our experience we have never come across a hymn tune in which the charm of the melody has been more happily seconded by musicianly harmonies, as in the setting of the hymn Praise, My Soul by Mr. Goss”.

Sir John Stainer followed Goss as organist at St. Paul’s, holding that position from 1872-88. Unlike his immediate predecessors, he had control over the choir (choosing the music, and convincing the adult members to come to rehearsals)! As a result the improvement in the choir was quite noticeable. He was an excellent organist.  Hubert Parry wrote in his diary, "Stainer played the last 3 movements of the Sonata in B-flat (Mendelssohn) afterwards most gloriously".  He was employed to play solo organ works at weekly concerts at Crystal Palace and took part regularly in the Three Choirs Festival.  His Fantasia comes from The Organ–a book he wrote on learning the organ, containing numerous exercises and pieces.

“Forgiveness is an attitude of forgiving reality for being what it is, forgiving an imperfect world…there is a fly in the ointment of reality, and it’s in your struggle with the wound that you move from unconsciousness to consciousness.”

Blessed Are Those Who Have Asked for Forgiveness

Blessed are those who have confessed
their erring ways,
who have asked for forgiveness.
Blessed are those whose burdens
have been lifted,
who are able to respond with love.
For the Beloved walks with them and
speaks to them in the Silence;
With mercy and compassion, they
are held in Love’s heart;
All who are at one with Love will
live in peace and harmony.

“In the spiritual life, nothing goes away. There is no heavenly garbage dump. It’s all here, wherever we are. Everything belongs. Even forgiveness does not mean it goes away. It means we forgive it for being there, nothing more. Even our demons do not go away. As Robert Bly wisely said: You don’t get rid of demons, you just educate them.”

“When I remember that God tolerates and forgives the smelliness of my own faults and failings, I am more ready to accept what I find disdainful in others. The more I know my own great need for the embrace of a merciful, forgiving God, the more I can be forgiving and merciful to those who wound me. The more I truly believe the Holy One loves and accepts me as I am, while longing for me to be all I can be, the more I will gather to my heart all who are part of this vast world of ours.”
