Seeing, Feeling and Hearing Our Voices of Independence
Billboard's Top Ten Songs Celebrating Independence Day- This compilation centers Mexico. It ends with Los Tigres del Norte' Somos Mas Americanos, which is considered a norteño immigrant anthem of sorts including the famous line, “I’d like to remind the Gringo that I didn’t cross the border, the border crossed me,” A new rendition by Mana is being used to mobilize voter registration among Latinos in the U.S.
Information focusing on Central Americans organizing in the US greatly appreciated. Pls see footer for where to send.

Chicano and Latino Studies Logo Explanation
Huitzilin symbolizes the image of la voluntad because this small bird can, with its’ will power, accomplish what most winged beings cannot. The hummingbird can fly backwards and upside down, it feeds while hovering, and it can lodge its beak into a tree trunk during the winter nights, maintaining its life force in near hypothermia in order to conserve its energy for the next day’s activities. For humans, the Huitzilin’s will power manifests itself in resolve and determination, such as the will to fight for social justice, or the will to share, rather than act selfishly. Huitzilin, as the symbol of our long heritage of struggle and perseverance, relates to the activist-advocate legacy of the Chicanx movement and to all Departments of Chicanx Studies across the nation.
*The first Chicano Studies logo was developed by community and departmental activist Ray Roybal. This rendition has updated colors, but otherwise remains true to the original.

George Floyd Scholarship
The George Floyd Scholarship is now accepting applications from all eligible students, including those with financial need and those who have been victims of police violence. To be eligible for the George Floyd Scholarship, you must be registered full-time in an undergraduate degree-seeking program at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.
The scholarship application is available at the UMTC Undergraduate Scholarship Search site. The award amount is expected to be approximately $3,500-$4,000 for one UMTC student split evenly between the fall and spring semesters.
To the maximum extent possible, preference will be given to students who will enhance the diversity of the student body as described by the University. In evaluating student body diversity, after the eligible pool of candidates is selected, an additional consideration will be given to Black or African American students if they are underrepresented in the University. For the 2020-2021 awarding of this scholarship, Black or African American students are underrepresented at the University.
The deadline for complete applications is 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, September 22, 2020.
Dream Fund Available for Immigrants and Others in UMN Community
The Immigration Response Team is currently accepting applications for The Dream Fund, a fund created to provide modest emergency grants to University of Minnesota students who:
Are authorized under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program;
Had Temporary Protected Status that was terminated;
Are undocumented;
Face a gap in immigration status that affects their work authorization.
This donor-supported fund is meant to ensure that unexpected emergencies and recent immigration changes will not derail students’ academic dreams. Eligible students may apply for a grant to help with educational expenses, unexpected medical or dental bills, housing needs, food insecurity, or other extenuating circumstances like DACA renewal fees. Recipients must be enrolled in a degree-seeking program on any UMN campus. International students generally do not qualify.
The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)provides grants of up to $1,500 for undergraduate students to do research with a faculty mentor. Undergraduate research is an excellent way to learn about research methods and to develop core competencies that will prepare students for future jobs or graduate programs.
Deadline for Spring 2021 projects: October 19, 2020
Contact CLA UROP Coordinator Wendy Nicholson-Kotas with questions about the program.
