Letter from the Rector
Hello,

Another full and busy week.  Friday I spent meeting some discretionary needs and working on the sermon.  Saturday was odds and ends, but also some good time with Moses.  Sunday was our last lovely informal Zoom worship, and Monday I took a real Sabbath.  Tuesday was a very busy day between Aaron being away on staff retreat and podcast group and the prep for a very packed Vestry meeting.  Your Vestry this year is thoughtful, kind, funny, and warm, and is doing a really beautiful job going at the pace the pandemic asks of us, paying attention to the world and to ourselves, not rushing, not panicking, and not working out of fear.  Wednesday was lots of busy work and staff meeting and calls.  We did have to decide to cancel our hopes of having a courtyard celebration service with Henry's music drifting outside because of the terrible air quality that is expected through Sunday.  It is hard to love and miss each other so much - and not physically harm anyone by asking you to risk your health to see each other!  We are still working on our end to make legitimate and real plans for in-person worship, but there are so many pieces that need to be in place for that to be a real possibility.  In the meantime, please keep doing your part by staying home, wearing masks, and social distancing!  Keeping the numbers low is what helps our county cases down and helps us move Phases.  Today was the end of the book group, which will continue in one form or another this fall - more opportunities for nourishing conversation and real connection.  I also had a Zoom meeting with the Campus Ministers of Province 8 and our weekly bishop all-clergy Zoom.  Tomorrow is sermon-writing and more calls.  Maybe a little break Saturday - we'll see!

Looking forward to debuting our shiny new livestream Sunday - please join us!!

Peace,
Shelly
Vestry Report - A zoom vestry meeting was held Tuesday September 8. We began the meeting by discussing two chapters of our text Emergent Strategies.

Dennis Tierney, gave us an update on Touchstone and the proposed use and development of the parking lot to the south of Christ Church and related environmental issues.

The Stewardship campaign will begin soon, led by Todd Voelker.  More information will be available in the near future.

The vestry will need two new members in 2021.  If you are interested in joining the vestry please contact Shelly or a vestry member for more information.

The regathering committee is still in the process of obtaining an estimate for the improvement  of the HVAC system.  There will be a meeting in the church on September 11th with a representative from an engineering company to discuss these issues.  Safe and healthy air flow in the body of the church continues to be  the main concern if the committee.

Campus Ministry will be joining forces with the UW Methodist Campus Ministry in the near future and they are  developing a group for twenties.

Melissa Morrell presented a preliminary budget for 2021.

Christ Church acknowledges that we gather on the land of the first people of Seattle, the Duwamish people, who are a people still living.

Christ Church discretionary money has gone and will continue to go to pay rent to the Duwamish, to acknowledge that our institution participated in the removal of ancestral owners of this land, and to begin to make material repair to those who have been harmed.

Christ Church encourages individual worshippers to likewise offer this form of confession and sacred amends at realrentduwamish.org. All funds go directly to Duwamish Tribal Services (DTS) to support the revival of Duwamish culture and the vitality of the Duwamish Tribe.

Street Chaplaincy needs you!  The Street Chaplaincy wagon has been faithfully making the rounds through the U District on Sunday afternoons, even through the days of COVID lockdowns.  We've simplified the process down to handing out a pre-packed bag, plus a choice of underwear size and candy preference, to minimize the amount of close contact needed, and volunteers are supplied with masks, gloves and hand sanitizer to keep themselves safe.  So far, the process has been going smoothly.

We've kept it going with 4 volunteers, alternating weeks in two groups of 2, but we could use some reinforcements, particularly after some recent schedule changes squeezing Sunday hours for 2 of our volunteers.

There are two ways to help: 1) we could use folks to walk with the wagon on Sundays, or, 2) to pre-pack the bags sometime during the week.  We're happy to train first-time volunteers as well. If you would feel comfortable participating in this vital ministry, please contact Wes Ono (w_ono@hotmail.com) to be added to the mailing list.
Little Free Pantry - Help Us Provide for our Neighbors
The Little Free Pantry is up and running. This is a project of the UW Campus Ministry based here at Christ Church.  Alan Wheaton, Phil Hodgins, and John Anderson have been instrumental in getting it built and installed, and in keeping it stocked. The Pantry is a way for Christ Church and our neighbors to provide non-perishable food, hygiene and paper items to our community. Christ Church has been stocking it daily and people in the neighborhood are also adding to the pantry fairly regularly.  The pantry gets emptied on most days so we know it is reaching people who need these items.

Even though Christ Church remains closed, the Little Free Pantry offers a way for the parish to continue our outreach to the neighborhood. If you are in the area, you can drive by after a grocery trip and add something to the pantry (it's in the garden on the west side of the church). Food donations must be non-perishable and can be items that can be eaten as is or that can be taken home to prepare. Donations to help us purchase items to add to the pantry are also welcome.

Click here for ways to donate. Be sure to indicate that your donation is for the Little Free Pantry.
Pat Hyland has paperback copies of all four books in The Dalai Lama's Cat series available for loan. They're a fun read, especially for cat people! Email Pat if you're interested.
Joys of the Week
Joys of the Week is meant as a medium to keep connected with each other during the Covid-19 outbreak, when we cannot share fellowship with each other in person. No joy is too small! If you have a joy you would like to share, please email a photo or a story to Cara at office@christchurchseattle.org.
Hello everyone,

I hope you all had safe Labor Day weekends. This week I wanted to show you all some Japanese doll I have.

The wooden one in the foreground is called a kokeshi, a wooden child's toy. I don't know how long it's been around, but long enough for me to have drawn on the back of it as a small child (whoops!).

The ones in the back I don't know the technical name of, but certainly they are for a nice occasion from the looks of their outfits - many layers, silk, etc. My great aunt used to make these dolls (though she did not make this one) - and she would often used old kimono whose garment lifetime was over, but could still be used for smaller things like this. My mom seems to think these dolls are cursed, but I have had them for several years now without any curse-related problems.

That's all for now - send me your joys!
Cara
