Come help us celebrate Mary Claire Van der Horst’s 90th birthday next Sunday, Sept. 13th. Here is the plan: Jeannie, Timothy, and Ann will arrive at 3 pm and do a mini-concert for Mary Claire under her carport. Next, we will do a “Drive-Through” in our cars and send our good wishes to this lovely lady, who worked so hard representing UUCJ throughout the years. We will meet at the Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church parking lot by 3:45pm. Address is 5644 Trout River Blvd. This is a short distance from her house and is on the same side of the street. Lad and Mindy will help organize the procession from there. We will mark her driveway with balloons- the house is set back and not visible from the road. Enter the driveway, say hello to Mary Claire, and proceed in a “U” fashion to exit. There is just one entrance and exit, so take turns and be safe. In case of rain, we will position Mary Claire under the carport, so we will still be able to do this. Hope you can make it!
John Young lives in San Francisco with wife, Kathleen Moran, both 77. They see his two children— Rahul and Leela—and their families regularly, and are blessed to be active grandparents with our four grandchildren [12 to 5 years]. John has finished Building Your Global Spirituality, and it is in the process of being published, and is now working on the Age of Negotiation and Nonviolent Activism. John was a UU minister for 40 years, also an adjunct professor at U. of N. Florida during his decade serving UUCJ. He was active in peace, anti-racism and anti-poverty, interfaith council, JCCI, and the local PICO group while serving UUCJ.
Byron Berg, a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of St. Augustine and previously a member of UUCJ, was recently hospitalized and then transferred to Bayview Rehabilitation in St. Augustine on August 18, 2020. He is receiving physical therapy and getting stronger. Cards and notes of good wishes should be sent to Byron’s home at 348 Armas Ave., St. Augustine, Fl 32084. Byron’s daughter, Wendy Marks, is taking his mail to him.

Given the low likelihood of spread of the coronavirus in small outdoor gatherings observing appropriate social distancing protocols, the UUCJ Board of Directors has approved the following motion: Move that UUCJ reopen the building grounds for small group gatherings (maximum of 15 people) for outside meetings, with adherence to Guidelines for Church- Sponsored Outdoor Gatherings.
