Has covid-19 proved businesses have a conscience? Many companies have adapted to help tackle the crisis, demonstrating surprising behaviours and structures. There has been a quality of 'hybridity' - mixing characteristics of market, government and nonprofit sectors to promote public good: delivery companies worked with governments to transport medical supplies; cosmetic firms made hand sanitisers; the Ford Foundation issued the first-ever taxable Social Bond to fund nonprofit organisations. But are these changes the product of a crisis, and what lessons can we learn about the design of organisations and the structuring of collaborations for the future? This week we welcomed a new cohort of 40 Executive MSc Social Business and Entrepreneurship students. They joined the Marshall Institute, online, from countries including Costa Rica, Nigeria, the United States, Kuwait, Sweden, Ghana, Austria and the UK. We are keen to return to the classroom when possible, but are delighted to report that online teaching has enabled us to facilitate outstanding group presentations by students over the past few months, as well as sophisticated interactions with expert practitioners.
