Getting involved at Iowa State

800 clubs and organizations: turns out, it's not hyperbole

When you were being wooed by Iowa State University, the Office of Admissions told you 17 times that we have over 800 clubs and organizations on campus. This might seem like overkill, but this actually means that there is something for everybody. Most Honors students are involved in other clubs, organizations, design teams, volunteer groups, and ensembles outside of Honors. Further, a huge number of those clubs and organizations are run by Honors students; FHP students go on to basically run this campus! Involvement with co- and extra-curricular clubs and organizations gives you valuable experience you can't necessarily get in the classroom: leadership skills, communication, and problem-solving experience are going to help your resume stand out and will benefit you in job or graduate school interviews. The people you meet with in campus organizations will become your friends, colleagues, and co-workers. You don't have to join 16 clubs (in fact, that is a bad idea), but you do need to check a few out and decide which are right for you.

Getting involved with these clubs (and, then, taking one over and creating a cult of personality with you at the center...just being honest here) can seem a little daunting, but that's what ClubFest is for: you can browse a huge sample and make the hard decisions later.

ClubFest is VIRTUAL this year, and starts Monday, September 14 //

Advice from an Honors Ambassador:

Sara Siebrecht, senior in Culinary Food Science

It’s the third week of school… it must be time for ClubFest! Everyone has a different approach to ClubFest, and I think it depends on what you’re looking for. Some people go in knowing exactly which clubs they want to talk to, and other people (like me) just like to wander up and down each row, collecting all the free candy (when it was in person) and carefully weighing which email lists to be a part of. Either way, you’re sure to find a club that feels like home to you. One of the great things about Iowa State is that it’s big enough to offer opportunities for anybody, and ClubFest is a one-stop-shop for a lot of them. Bonus: joining a club or two can make this big university feel a little smaller. I’d challenge you to check it out on starting on September 14!

Can't make it to ClubFest?

If you can't make it to ClubFest, it's not the end of the world. Look up the club(s) you'd like to join, and shoot them an email to see when the next club meeting is and how they'll be meeting this fall.
