The Week That Was: Frank Muffin, JT Earle

And the August new music avalanche!

Mon. Aug. 31 - We used the final day of August to say farewell to the hugely talented Justin Townes Earle, who left this world too soon.

Tue. Sept. 1 - We started September by kicking off our August new music series. Up first was Jim, whose perfect record for picking perfect records remained in tact. He chose new tunes from Toots and the Maytals, Jenny O. and Bully.

Wed. Sept. 2 - Patrick grabbed the new music reins on Wednesday and went riding out into the fields, listening to Barringtone, Vee Mukarati and Ribbon Stage as he went. Is he still talking?

Thur. Sept. 3 - Thursday brought four excellent new music picks from four excellent people: our beloved interns Sam, Matt, Sami and Mary. Specifically, they showcased Madame Gandhi (Mary), Billie Eilish (Sam), the Killers (Matt) and Samia (Sami).

Fri. Sept. 4 - Friday brought the week to a close with a very special episode: The full-on introduction of one of our favorite bands, Frank Muffin. We love them so much that we wanted you to know them too.

LISTENER OF THE WEEK: BETH WATKINS

Love this life !

I live in … Columbus OH.

I work in. … public relations.

I discovered “Rockin’ the Suburbs” … through my old high school classmate, Barret Ries.

My favorite episodes are … the series on Genesis; I loved them in high school (both art rock years & Phil years).

My favorite artists are … Crowded House, Hem, R.E.M. (Green album & IRS Records years), Death Cab for Cutie, Snow Patrol/Tired Pony.

The first records I ever bought were … Pyromania by Def Leppard and Get Lucky by Loverboy, on cassette!

The last record I bought was … a CD from The Vindys, an up-and-coming rock band from Youngstown OH.

The first concert I saw was … Genesis at the Richfield Coliseum (the Palace on the Prairie!) in 1987.

My favorite song lyric is … "Love this life / Don't wait till the next one comes / Pedal my faith / The wheels are still turning round, turn round / And maybe the day will come / When you'll never have to feel no pain / After all my complaining / Gonna love this life"

I have met a rock star … Bruce Springsteen — twice!

I am drinking … Summer Teeth by Columbus Brewing Co.

My favorite basketball team is … Ohio State Buckeyes.

My philosophy of life is … "I'm not going to worry until there's something to worry about."

MJ'S BAD BAND NAME OF THE WEEK

Run for the Roses!

Rob Does the Derby

Listener Rob Gates, a former Louisvillian, offers this betting advice for the First Saturday in September (what?)

Saturday will be the most unusual day in the Kentucky Derby’s 146-year history. We'll skip the Covid impact on people, attendance, etc., and get right to the race itself.

Because of this bizzaro year, Tiz the Law enters the race as an overwhelming favorite after crushing the field in the shortened Belmont Stakes. He is most likely to take the Run for the Roses, but if you want to make money betting the Derby, you may want to run from the law.

Fortunately you can win money in horse racing by doing something other than picking the winner, and a close look at this Derby field shows there is potentially a lot of money to be made. Of the 18 horses entered, 15 are considered longshots, with odds of 20-1 or higher. If a horse at 20-1 wins, you're going to get paid $42 on a $2 wager. If you like picking only winners, you can certainly wager $2 on one of those 50-1 shots and if he wins, you're cashing a $102 ticket.

But odds literally are that. Tis the Law is going to win, so perhaps a smarter bet would be to pick a longshot to place (finish second) or show (finish third.) The payouts aren't as much, but in either scenario you will much more than double your money.

I usually like to pick three or four horses and place a wager known as either “3 across” or “5 across,” which is either $3 or $5 bet that the horse will either win, place or show. Each place costs me either $3 or $5 dollars so its either a $9 or $15 wager for each horse. The advantage here is I am covered for the top three finish positions and if the horse wins, I get paid out all three positions. If the horse finishes second, I get paid the place and show positions and if he finishes third, I get only the place value, but on a $9 bet at 50-1 I am still well in the black. Other ways to bet the Derby include exacta (bet two horses in order or "box" the bet, meaning that if the two horses you bet both either win or show, you win, but the bet will cost you double.

Two horses, too boring? Try betting a trifecta, that's picking the first, second and third place horses in order (or if you box it, three horses to finish in the top three.) If two longshots are atop your trifecta, you're bringing home the bacon. If you bet three longshots in your trifecta and it hits, you're going to get paid at least $10,000 on a $6 wager. As you can see, there is money to be had on Saturday if you pick the correct horses to either win, place or show.

For more on how to bet the Kentucky Derby along with expert picks and better explanations on the wagers I mentioned above, check out this story from The Courier-Journal (the newspaper at which Jim and I used to work) located in Louisville, the home of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby. https://bit.ly/2EUdk7u

Enjoy a mint julep too. That’s a winning play even if your bets don’t pay off.

Friday New Releases: Three Days of Albums

There's a three-day weekend on the horizon, which means you've got an extra day to consume these shiny brand new platters. Let's work!

Bill Callahan - Gold Record (Drag City)
The indie veteran opens this album by saying, “Hello, I’m Johnny Cash.” And there’s a certain truth to that statement. Callahan’s voice comes close to the weight of Cash’s, and his songs possess a certain majesty in their commentary on life. If only some TV suit would green-light a variety show. We’d so watch that.

Carolina Story - Dandelion (Black River Americana)
This husband-wife Americana duo takes inspiration from the Jayhawks and presciently sings about our current condition and will also soon appear in a couple of interview episodes on Rockin’ the Suburbs, so that should be enough for you to check out their latest album.

Grant-Lee Phillips - Lightning, Show us Your Stuff (Yep Roc)
Music fans who enjoy the earthier side of Wilco will take to Phillips’ musical style. Those who seek commentary on the human struggle will take to his lyrics on this, his 10th solo album.

Throwing Muses - Sun Racket (Fire)
Kristin Hersh continues to carry the flag for Throwing Muses, the band she founded in the ’80s with her step-sister Tanya Donelly. Though she has recorded solo albums in the interim, this is the first album from the Muses in seven years, and contains much of that same classic dissonance and distortion.

Various - AngelHeaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan & T. Rex (BMG)
Tribute albums can be a smart marketing gimmick, a way to get a new generation of fans interested in a dinosaur act. In this case, the likes of Kesha, Lucinda Williams, Perry Farrell, Beth Orton and Father John Misty, among many others, cover songs by glam great Marc Bolan. As with any tribute album, it’s an uneven affair. But let’s get back to that first point: If it inspires new listeners to unearth Electric Warrior or The Slider, then this is a worthwhile endeavor indeed.
