Devotion for Friday, September 4th

WPPC Youth at the Good Shepherd Center
November 2013
Matthew 25: I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat,
I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink…

Jesus calls us to feed people who are hungry. While some progress to reduce hunger has been made, millions of people around the world and here at home still do not get enough nutritious food to live healthy lives.

The need for food assistance, in these days of COVID19, affects so many including folks who have never sought food assistance. Our continuing efforts to help individuals and families stretch their limited food dollars in these trying times is crucial.

I have coordinated Winter Park’s “I was hungry and…” local mission since 2008, and I have been a regular volunteer at Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard since 2014. Winter Park’s support for hungry neighbors has resulted in over 80,530 pounds of donated food (including some hygiene items) to Good Shepherd Center and Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard through 2019.

Good Shepherd currently provides meals to their shelter residents, but the number of residents has been reduced due to COVID19 restrictions. They have successfully transitioned many of their homeless clients to more permanent housing over the past several months. The center sponsors food giveaway days for folks in their neighborhood near 8th and Ann Streets.

Winter Park continues to support Good Shepherd by shopping for staples such as sugar, mayonnaise and condiments plus perishable items including cheese and margarine using funds donated to our church for this mission.

Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, located at the corner of Fourth and Red Cross Streets., currently safely staffs food distribution days for clients on Wednesdays and Saturdays. In August, the cupboard served approximately 3800-4500 clients. During pre-COVID times, when the cupboard was open five days a week, approximately 2700-3000 clients were served each month. The cupboard strives to provide 3-5 days of healthy foods for each family. Until the cupboard struggles to have enough for all, clients will not be limited to one visit per month, which used to be the case.

The cupboard also packs specialized items for diabetics and No Stove clients and continues to provide toilet tissue and soap for all clients.

The cupboard’s partnerships with the Food Bank of Eastern North Carolina, The Emergency Food Assistance Program, Good Shepherd Center, and many compassionate community support efforts such as neighborhood, church and company food drives help keep shelves stocked, at least most of the time.

.
So how can we at Winter Park continue to help? Some of the items Mother Hubbard’s needs every week include:
.
  • brown rice
  • regular oatmeal
  • juice boxes
  • water
  • mac and cheese & rice-a-roni
  • toilet tissue
  • whole grain cereals
  • canned legume beans (navy, kidney, black)
  • healthy low sodium soups
  • bar soap
If you can get these items to church, I will deliver them to the cupboard. And if anyone is interested in volunteering for Mother Hubbard’s, please contact me at sbcause@hotmail.com.

Many thanks to all who are helping our neighbors obtain nourishing food. Thanks be to God!

Worship at WPPC in September

Sunday, September 13th at 7pm - Outdoor "Parking Lot" Worship Service with Communion.   We will have individually packaged Communion bread/juice cups.

Wednesday, September 23rd at 7pm -  Online Communion Worship Service on Zoom.

Wednesday, September 30th at 7pm -  Outdoor "Parking Lot" Worship Service.

Friends, as always, please wear a mask, bring your own chair - if possible, and exercise caution when deciding whether an in person service makes sense for you and the members of your household.

Sunday Morning Worship:   E-Mails to Live-Stream

Friends, this Sunday we will send out a liturgy for at-home worship by e-mail.  Soon, however, we will begin sending out a link to watch our worship service live on Sunday morning (or watch the recording any time after the service has concluded).

The timing of that transition depends on how well the two tests described below work.   We want our first "live" Sunday to be easily accessible and a good experience for those leading worship, the computer / sound board operator, and everyone at home.

If you are able to watch the services below either live (as they occur) or after the fact, I would appreciate your feedback.  It would be a great help to hear what went well - and what didn't!

Live Stream "Test" Services

Wednesday, September 9th at 11:00am:  Preaching Practice

YouTube Link:   Will Come Later

What we are testing:   I have never preached to a camera in the balcony before.  I am not sure how different and difficult that will feel.  So, for this service, I am going to give an old sermon as well as lead prayers.  We may also try to insert a pre-recorded video into the live stream.  Is the sermon - one that was originally written to be delivered in person - still effective?   Too long?

Depending on how the two tests above go, we may announce others.  Thank you for your patience and your prayers!

In Christ,

Emile
