A Favorite Apple Salad:  I wanted to highlight a few things today including this all-star apple salad. You can see the seasons beginning to change in the markets and gardens - watermelons, tomatoes, apples, pomegranates, all mashed up. At the same time we're in the middle of a heat wave in Los Angeles. I'll jot down the iced tea Ive been brewing & chilling for this weekend down below, a few of you were asking about it. The salad? It's hearty and substantial, colorful and crunchy - made with heirloom apples, shaved celery, and toasted nuts of your choosing. The dressing is crème fraîche (or sour cream / yogurt) spiked with rosemary, garlic and champagne vinegar.

A Few Favorites This Week //

- Cooking from: I'm so excited to have a copy of Cortney Burns' new cookbook, Nourish me Home: 125 Soul-Sustaining Elemental Recipes in my hands. Some of you might remember my love letter to Bar Tartine here. I've missed Cortney's cooking in the years since & the book is an inspiring glimpse into her cooking and life in the years after she left San Francisco. I also picked up a copy of Dishoom: The First Ever Cookbook from the Much-Loved Indian Restaurant after checking it out from the library on repeat. It's a 400-page force & I'm going to cook from it until it falls apart - bhel, chana chat salad, akuri, & allll the chutneys.

- Things I've ordered this week: More natural wasabi paste from Toiro Kitchen. Grabbed some special rice vinegar while I was at it, and yuzu powder. Also, I love these Bright Earth nori sheets  (raw, vegan, tested radiation free). I used to buy them at Rainbow Co-op in SF, but now that I've moved I order them direct - just did a big re-up so I can make more of these. What are your culinary secret weapons these days? Message me back if you have a favorite or two. I'm always on the lookout - laugh/cry. For a long time these chiles were it for me.

- Watching: Steve Sando (Rancho Gordo) + Lukas Volger on Heirloom Beans + here's the Vegetarian Heirloom Bean Kitchen recipe PDF

Ginger Verbena Turmeric Iced Tea //

I'm always grabing spices and herbs to brew teas to sip on throughout the day. Often iced (because it can get hot here). A few of you asked me about this one when I posted it to Insta Stories. I have a prolific lemon verbena plant and I love using the leaves (fresh or dried) in teas like this one. Here's how it comes together // To eight cups of boiling water add 20 crushed cardamom pods, 10 lemon verbena leaves, 20 black pepper corns, and 10 ginger slices (peeled, 1/4-inch thick, size of a quarter + crushed a bit). Boil for 15 minutes, remove from heat and stir in 1/8 teaspoon dried turmeric. Let it sit for another couple of minutes. Strain, chill, & serve over ice. Another variation I love is the same exact tea made with saffron threads (about 10) in place of the turmeric.
