October Highlights
What is Breast Cancer Awareness Month?
It is a worldwide annual campaign taking place in October, involving thousands of organisations, to highlight the importance of breast awareness, education and research. There are plenty of other ways to get involved and support our work during Breast Cancer Awareness Month and beyond. From campaigning to help women get access to the breast cancer drugs they need, to sharing information women need to know about checking their breasts, your support will help to reach the day when breast cancer has claimed its last life.
October Event
It's that time of year, next month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and unfortunately we had to cancel the Gala this year. But that didn't stop us from raising money to support our early detection efforts throughout Alaska. Join us for our Save the Boobies Raffle! Each ticket gets you A $20 dinner at the Cookie Jar, a chance to win two Alaska Airline tickets, and other treats.

A Special Thanks to Costco

The BCDC family wants to give a special thanks  to Costco for their support during Covid. Every year it's our mission to honor those effected by breast cancer and have survive the disease. In place of our annual luncheon, we have partnered with Costco to provide a special gift for our survivors.
Reduce the Risk of Breast Cancer

In addition to getting an annual clinical breast exam and screening mammogram (for women 40 and older), you can take action to reduce your risk of breast cancer by following the simple guidelines below:

Plant foods – try for 5-10 servings a day of fruits and vegetables

Reduce alcohol consumption – only 1 or 2 drinks a week

Exercise 5 times a week for 30 minutes

Vitamin D supplement – take the minimal requirement of 2000 IU daily

Examine your breasts monthly – know your breasts so you can identify changes

No tobacco – smokers have a 50% increase rate of breast cancer

Take care of yourself – reduce stress by exercising, reading, listening to music, breathing techniques

Ideal Body Mass Index (BMI) < 25 – obese women are more likely to have advanced breast cancer
