Spring has sprung!

A tūī in a flowering kōwhai
Hi <<First Name>>

The kōwhai are flowering, the tūī are singing, and the winds are blowing gale-force - it must be spring in Wellington! The birds certainly think so. Our resident kererū is busy searching the garden for twigs for a nest. The middle-of-the-night food runs have started for the local kākā - they nest in a nearby reserve and he calls to her as he returns to the nest with tasty snacks. And the melodious riroriro|grey warbler is filling the garden with beautiful trills. What are the signs of spring (or autumn) where you live?

I've been working on a series of bird portraits in a more photographic style. That's not to say there isn't a lot of photo-artistry going on behind the scenes, but the results are more like a photograph than a painting. It can be hard to resist putting these beguiling faces into a surrealist scene, but sometimes clean and simple is the way to go. What do you think? Do you prefer naturalistic or quirky?

These three images above were all recently featured in the international photography magazine "AWAKE: Photography." They are all available as limited-edition prints on Elegance Velvet fine art paper, with sales supporting Forest & Bird (tūī) and Zealandia (kākā and kiwi).

I've been blown away with the amazing photography and art coming from participants in my Art of Birding Wildlife & Nature challenge - take a look at Excio's latest blog for the best of July - there are some jaw-dropping images!

TinyArt piece featuring the kākā kura

Over winter I've been building up my stock of TinyArt pieces. Each piece is hand-mounted in a frame made from upcycled offcuts, including anti-glare glass. I love using art papers and washi as mats to give each piece a completely unique look. I don't get any choice over the frames - it all depends on what people have been ordering and what offcuts are available. But its so much fun working out which piece to put with each frame. If you're willing to take your chances too, you can let me know which print you'd like and roughly what sort of frame you prefer and I can put something together for you. TinyArt pieces make fabulous gifts for the bird lovers in your life, so if you're a planner and are already thinking ahead to Christmas, do sing out and I can start putting pieces aside.

A softly-focused daffodil
It's been a tough year for everyone and its just staggering that it's already September. I do hope you've been able to stay connected to nature in your local area. For me, it makes all the difference to my well-being. With that being said, I'm going to sign off now and go and plant some seedlings and sniff the daphne. Hopefully, in the coming months, the effort will pay off in having some flower photos to share with you!

Cheers,

Judi
