Covid 19, tornadoes, derechos, floods and now fires. Here at Live Oak Gallery, we wake up each morning, grateful for all the blessings we have been granted, and concerned for friends, family and all those affected by the fires out west, the storm in Louisiana, not to mention the virus -- everywhere. Art can't replace a lost relative, a burned down house or a blown off roof, but it can be a healer for the heart and soul. It can also be a force for unity, overcoming the civil discord that threatens to divide us. At the gallery, we hold to the offical motto of Key West, our previous hometown: We are all equal members of One Human Family. Whoever you are; whatever you're dealing with, take a moment to take a walk with nature, and take in some art. It will turn your day around. And as Ziggy Marley might say: "Make it to the one bright day, make it to the two bright days, make it to the three bright days, make it many many many many many bright days."

Handmade nature prints by Dawn Wilkins are inspired by classic botanical lithographs, vintage scientific illustrations and nature studies interpreted in her own vibrant contemporary style. Her work features accurate reproductions from subjects found in nature such as leaves and ferns, that are painted and pressed with the images preserved on silk screens, from which she creates her compositions. Illustrations in watercolor and colored pencil are often added to tell a story about nature's interconnectedness. Antique wood frames are carefully selected to enhance each particular subject, creating a singular artwork to hang on the wall or rest on a table or shelf.

A new selection of watercolors from Christine, a life-long painter who grew up in New England and studied at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts. Many years spent migrating between the Florida Keys and Nantucket inspired her fascination with coastal seas, skies and infinitely changing weather patterns. Her intensely saturated watercolors are rendered in an instinctive way that allows the pigment to freely discover how the painting will evolve and find its final form.

An avid birdwatcher, Brenda Francis travels far and wide seeking the elusive birds on her list, and finding plenty of painting subjects that inspire her along the way. Based in Tallahassee, Brenda has a remarkable track record of juried shows and awards. She works primarily in oils, and her interests tend toward family dogs, wildlife and the woodsy landscapes she grew up with.

The St George Island Art & Wine Splash now in its fifth year, is an excellent way to celebrate art in the great outdoors. We are pleased to be a part of it by hosting a reception on the day after the event - Sunday, October 11 - featuring the five plein air artists, who are participating with workshops on Friday and painting on Saturday. Natalia Andreeva, Brenda Pinnick, Craig Reynolds, Maryo Smith and Cory Wright
are accomplished painters who have won many awards, including winners of last spring's SGI Paint Out plein air painting event. The gallery will have a special show of their work including paintings just completed the previous day at the Splash. Wine and light refreshments will be served outside on our front lawn. For everyone's well-being, mask and social distancing guidelines will be observed. We will welcome ten guests at a time in the gallery; masks required.
