Janne McMahon OAM, mental health advocate, spoke with Samara Ross from The Senior online newspaper about how BPD affects older people. "Treatment is just as effective if you're 70 or 17, but access is entirely different". She also noted that "the prognosis is excellent if people can access the right service at the right time." Aaron lives with BPD, and recently shared some of the changes he’d like to see in the mental health sector with SBS Insight. These changes include an 'increase to the amount of sessions a person with BPD may receive under the Better Access to Medicare Scheme' and the 'media refraining from reinforcing negative stereotypes associated with all mental illness, not just BPD. Anne Reeve was instrumental in bringing the Family Connections program to Australia. With the late Dr Perry Hoffman and Prof Andrew Chanen she established the Australian branch of the the US-based National Education Alliance for BPD (NEABPD Australia). She was a tireless advocate for educating people about the illness and created the BPD Awareness Week platform to address the stigma associated with the diagnosis. Soon to be presented to goverment! Currently there are just over 16,550 signatures on change.org. Help us to make the next milestone – 20,000! Encourage your family and friends and colleagues (maybe even your GP) to sign and keep the momentum going. The petition is requesting an increase in the number of funded visits for treating BPD by the MBS Better Access to Mental Health Initiative, from 10 sessions to 40 sessions, for BPD and other complex mental illnesses.
