Your Vital Updates from
Tasman Bay Chiropractic
Hi All

As we draft this edition we are still working in Level Two, which means we are back to the Level Two protocols. Your support with the time taken to disinfect tables and for the chiropractors to sanitise their hands is appreciated. We are looking forward to having the toys out again as well as the magazines. Roll on Level One!

Thanks to all of you who have rung to reschedule your appointment when you have been unwell with cold/flu symptoms. As most of you know, we would normally be happy to see you when you are unwell - even if we move you to the end of the shift - to support your healing, but in the current times, we absolutely can not offer care when you have these symptoms.

This has meant that we have been able to find same day appointments for those who need them which is the upside of not being able to care for people with cold/flu symptoms.

We know that many of you juggle shifts, being on call and busy lives, so we do try hard to match your window of time to our appointment book. Our chiropractors work closely with our CAs to support this goal. So if you have been meaning to get yourself checked and a window presents itself, do give us a call. We will strive to find you a time.
Our July-August theme was Support Local. It is always suprising to us just how many small businesses there are out in our community, and it was great to showcase some of these on our noticeboard. In a nice example of serendipity, the local 'We've Got This' promotion overlapped with our theme so we were very happy to join in this promotion too. Below are a couple of our Facebook posts during that campaign.
TBC is 18!
September is birthday month for us! Tasman Bay Chiropractic opened on 18th September 2002. This year we are celebrating this with fun around THEN AND NOW. Team members have dug out a photo each from 2002.
The poster is also on our noticeboard along with our Facebook Cover image for the month (below). NO comment on the photo on the left!
Chiropractic Turns 125

The history of chiropractic began in 1895 when Daniel David Palmer (known as DD Palmer) of Iowa performed the first chiropractic adjustment on a partially deaf janitor, Harvey Lillard. While Lillard was working without his shirt on in Palmer's office, Lillard bent over to empty the trash can.
Palmer noticed that Lillard had a vertebra out of position. He asked Lillard what happened, and Lillard replied, "I moved the wrong way, and I heard a 'pop' in my back, and that's when I lost my hearing."Palmer, who was also involved in many other natural healing philosophies, had Lillard lie face down on the floor and proceeded with the adjustment. The next day, Lillard told Palmer, "I can hear that rackets on the streets."

Chiropractic today is about helping the body to work at its best. Your nervous system, which controls all the functions of your body, is protected by your spine. Sometimes the stresses and strains of daily life cause nerve messages from the brain to get blocked. By making small adjustments to the spine, nervous system and soft tissue chiropractors can remove these blockages so that the messages reach the organs effectively.

The philosophy is simple: if your nervous system is working properly the body is better able to heal itself and perform at its full potential. A healthy spine and nervous system can help anyone at any time in their life regardless of age, condition, presence or symptoms.

With more and more people looking for a natural approach to healthcare, chiropractic is the fastest growing wellness profession in the world. It’s now the third largest primary healthcare profession in the west after medicine and dentistry, and is legally recognised in over 45 countries.

World Spine Day
For October, we will be recognising World Spine Day. World Spine Day has been celebrated since 2012, with October 16, 2020 marking the ninth official World Spine Day. World Spine Day partners with people and organisations around the world to highlight the burden of spinal pain and disability.

The World Spine Day theme for 2020 is BACK ON TRACK!

With the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic affecting millions of people worldwide, lockdown restrictions have led to a lack of physical activity that has made people more susceptible to spinal pain and disability.

World Spine Day 2020 will focus on getting people BACK ON TRACK to revitalise their spines and restore spinal health and well being.

Now and Then

While thinking of celebrating TBC's 18th birthday this month, it has been great to think back to what we were doing in 2002.  My first realisation was that this was before I owned a digital camera and would require a hunt through the photo albums!  I was 25 then, the number doesn’t seem too far different to how I feel now, but when I think about the life experience between then and now it seems vast.

In 18 years there has been travel and work overseas, marriage, the loss of in-laws and my Dad, two gorgeous girls (now 11 and 7), house buying and selling, renovations, becoming an aunty, new friends, returning to work and study and so much more.

Now and Then has been a chance to reminisce and a reminder to be mindful of all the little moments along the way that make your journey unique.

It’s also a reminder that birthdays are special to people in different ways. I love showing that I appreciate that something new was created on that day.

Happy Birthday TBC

TBC Since 2002

After the birth of my first child, we planned a move back to the Tasman-Nelson region. As part of that plan I bought this building in the year 2000. After much discussion, many via phone calls, with my father who was the project manager and builder we opened. I saw my first patient at TBC on the birthday of chiropractic - entirely co-incidentally! I was very stressed as a young professional with debt and no patient base and only found out later about this very neat co-incidence.

The practice has always been popular with the locals and it has been a pleasure to serve the Tasman-Nelson region with the various team members over the years. There have been a number of changes over the last 18 years with the latest one being the practice software now fully online - rather like Google! Originally we invested a lot of space and infrastructure into storing files and x-rays and this is now all done digitally.
The fundamental practice of chiropractic has not changed over the last 18 years however, most grads now come from the NZ College which, in my opinion, produces world class graduates which I have always been happy to work alongside. I have always been impressed with the skills and aptitude these grads demonstrate.

When TBC opened I remember only one other chiropractor being in Richmond, four or five in Nelson and one or two in Motueka. Now there at least 20 chiropractors in the region which means that a greater proportion of our community has the opportunity to experience chiropractic care.

On a personal note, 2020 has seen me finishing up my chiropractic political career, having served on the council of NZCA and as President for five years and then going on to become a board member of the World Federation of Chiropractic in 2016. I continue my professional involvement outside of TBC as a director of The Hamblin Trust and at CCEA.

I still quietly hope that one of my children will become a chiropractor and I give a gentle nudge now and then. All seem coy at this point about joining the profession. Watch this space!

Warmest regards
Corrian

Then and Now

18 years is a long time, and while I haven't been with Tasman Bay Chiropractic for quite that long, I did join the team in 2007.

I still remember the first day that I walked in the door, when I came to hand in my C.V. I remember the friendly smiling staff (even though I was not someone on the appointment book). I remember the warm feeling I got from walking into the reception area. I remember the pleasant smell from the oil burners in the rooms.

I would like to think that we still give this type of impression to all our clients, both first timers and regular visiting. In the time I have been here I have worked alongside six chiropractors, and at least ten other chiropractic assistants.

Life certainly has changed for me in the 13 years I have been with Tasman Bay Chiropractic. I met my husband, got married, lost my mum, bought a house, had 2 kids, and I am blessed to say that the team, and clients here, have been with me on every step of that journey. They really are a part of my extended family.

With much love and light to you all, Victoria.

My 2020 Update

Spring is around the corner, life is busy and getting busier for me both in the practice and out.

A small update for those of you who have been following my house hunting journey for the past year - I have finally moved into my new house! Very exciting times for me, as well as scary, putting myself into a whole heap more debt. The next job for me will be to get some flatmates to enjoy living with and help make my house a home.

Recently I have been getting involved a bit more with the community. I went to the Age Concern building next door to the practice to run a discussion session with a great group of our older adults in the Richmond community around health, chiropractic and the options they have out there in the world that are outside the standard medical profession. During the talk I spoke about myself and the practice and then shared a video from our website explaining the role chiropractic care has in the older adults’ life and wellbeing. If you haven’t had a chance to look at the amazing chiropractic videos on our website now is the time. They are only a few minutes long and are on a multitude of different topics and how chiropractic care relates to them. Click on the link here
https://www.tasmanbaychiropractic.co.nz/resources/videos/.

Afterwards there was a great discussion around how chiropractic could benefit everyone there with some talking more than others. One gentleman even suggested that it sounds like chiropractic care should be something everyone has access to, with which I wholeheartedly agree. It was great to have a chance to discuss and answer questions the people at Age Concern had and I look forward to meeting with them again in the future. If you have any questions about Age Concern and what they do follow the link here https://www.ageconcern.org.nz.
Next on the agenda for me is to speak in a countrywide meeting for chiropractors and chiropractic students about the joys of living and practicing in a smaller region outside of the main centres. Obviously most chiropractic practices are located in densely populated areas such as Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. The purpose of this talk is to educate graduating and practicing chiropractors in New Zealand about what life is like outside these three cities and how they can get involved in smaller communities. One of the amazing things I have noticed is that being a health-care provider for a smaller population has allowed me to cultivate meaningful relationships with families and workplaces that I am involved with both at work and in my personal life. I am part of a group of about eight others who are each discussing what it is like in their area. Hopefully we can attract more chiropractors to the Nelson/Tasman region to give even more to our community.

Finally, over the last few months a little side project of mine has been to recruit another chiropractor to join us at TBC. Along with Lynley and Corrian we have put the pen to paper and signed a new chiropractor to the team. Watch this space! When the newest member of our team starts at the practice my role will change from that of Associate to Mentor Associate. This will not change my role in practice but it means I may be out and about a bit more often representing the practice to help spread the word throughout the community. Feel free to ask me about our new chiro next time you’re in the practice.

Enjoy the springtime - Hamish

From the Far North to Home

I recently celebrated my birthday. The big five-o. Was I ready? Actually, I was more than ready.

When I look back to 2002 I don’t even think I thought once about turning 50 . That seemed a lifetime away. Living in the moment was definitely how I rolled!

I lived in Whangarei where I worked for the Legal Services Agency and rented a cute little cottage. I put in my own vegetable garden, painted the odd wall and treated it like my own. The landlady loved me and I spent seven wonderful years there.

Whangarei and the Far North were stunning. I caught my first really BIG snapper in the dark of night in a small dinghy. 17 pound - that was memorable.

I met and made lifelong friends and even my brother-in-law before I met my husband. Life is funny.

I moved to Wellington in 2003 with the same Agency and discovered the vibrancy and beauty of Wellington City. The saying “You can’t beat Wellington on a good day” is indeed very true. There were many fun times in Wellington. I met two travelling girls, one Welsh and the other Irish, they became my flatties as well as meeting my soon to be husband.

I loved my job, my life. I had lots of money which I spent on myself, pre children times, but I longed for my family in Nelson. After getting married and losing our first child, Joseph, to stillbirth and then producing three more children, all under three it was decided that Nelson was where we needed to be. So, after a touch of fate in the job department for my husband we moved home in 2014.

HOME, YES, HOME! So great to be back, now what?

Why don’t I just start my own little business? I grew and experimented with micro-greens, selling to restaurants and local cafes all from the comfort of home. It was awesome.

I also dabbled in abstract oil painting and found myself starting to grieve - a delayed grief from baby loss. I went with it and decided to let it all out. Some of my paintings even sold.

I realised amongst the healing process that I had to address the issue of problem drinking as well, one of the downsides of grief.. I had to go all in on this journey and I am so thankful that I did just that. A huge amount of self work was required, painful crippling moments but the quote “Nothing Changes if Nothing Changes” repeated in my head. You got this Elise.

So, now that I am 50 I am definitely a different, more improved person. I have a huge toolbox full of experience and I am excited about my future.

During the weekend I decided to paint a feature wall in our lounge vibrant pink! It looks fantastic. Who knows what I will decide to do next!!

Of course I will always be grateful for the workplace that I am part of. Life long learners and a really cool bunch of people.

Here's to the next 18 years.

With Love
Elise

Frequently Asked Question of the Season
Why does my chiropractor recommend a follow up time frame for my next visit?

Your chiropractor will set a recommended time frame for a followup visit based on a variety of factors. These may include the length of time the current issue has been a problem for you, your overall health and general structural stability, their knowledge of how well adjustments ‘hold’ for you etc.

We recommend that you keep to the care plan that is set for you – it is devised using a combination of well-developed specialist knowledge and your own health status. Your plan is an individual plan devised to maximise the benefit you gain from your visits.

Then and Now
In 2002 I was pretty focussed on being a mum to our three beautiful children. My husband was travelling internationally a lot for work and I was also working part-time as a consultant for Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu - mainly supporting those who were going through redundancy or a change of job after many years in a particular role. Life was full and busy.

We were living in Lower Hutt and our older two were at school and the youngest at a fantastic kindy. Although we were living on a small section pretty centrally, we had a great piece of land on our northern boundary owned by a mission centre - which they didn't use but did mow - and we were welcome to use. It was fantastic for our children - Hamish in particular who was very keen on football. With teen years approaching very quickly, we were starting to think about what we wanted life to look like for our children through this time, and a semi-rural life and good local public co-ed schools were very appealing to us.
By mid 2002, the search was on! We were hoping for less pressure to get in the top sports team, wear the 'right' labels clothing and to go to the 'right' school. Attending the local school, turning up to school in a t-shirt and shorts with bare feet in the summer, and the culture that there is a team for anyone who wants to play were what we found by moving to Mapua mid 2003. By 2004 I was a client here at TBC (thanks to my netball coach) and then in 2011 I started working at TBC. The rest is history!

I will remember 2020 for very different reasons. I am still very thankful to live in Mapua - and this region - and this country! My husband no longer travels internationally for work, but we had great plans for this year to travel to the Northern Hemisphere to meet up with our daughter who has been living in London since 2015. It is wonderful to work alongside our son here at TBC and I still have a job where I regularly interact with lovely people in a place that strives to make life better for people and the community.

The intervening years have seen our children leave home, our daughter and close family and friends living through the Canterbury earthquakes, family members pass on, down-sizing our home and property, some wonderful overseas travel,
making new friends, discovering more of NZ, joining new groups and taking up new past-times.

Then and Now has inspired reflecting, reminiscing and appreciation. Lots of things have changed - and lots has stayed the same. I hope that you also enjoy a moment or two of thinking on 'Then and Now'.

Hugs
Lynley
