JK 2021 cancelled

British Orienteering and SWOA have unfortunately had to announce the cancellation of JK 2021, which was due to be held in Cornwall next Easter. They quote difficulty agreeing permission for the event with landowners while the COVID-19 pandemic continues, and it is no longer feasible to continue with preparations and staging of the JK. You can read the full announcement here.

CLOK open training session - interested??

From time to time, there are enquiries about training sessions for CLOK members, either to help those new to the sport or generally by those looking to improve their techniques. So we’d like to gauge the overall interest, so that a few suitably discreet sessions could be organised. The rough idea would be to provide explanation of the key navigation techniques and then exercises to practice them, plus some general hints and tips, all in a COVID-safe environment (outdoors, socially-spaced) and in full compliance with government and British Orienteering guidance.

If you’re interested, please email me and include your age-class, the course colour you normally run and what you’d like to get out of the training – general requests are fine, but if you want specific training, you need to provide more detail. Please include any regular constraints for days of the week (e.g. not available during the working week or only available on Tuesdays and Sundays), and send your responses by Monday 28th September so that we can collate the replies and plan / communicate accordingly. Location would probably be Flatts Lane Country Park, Errington Woods (near New Marske) or Cod Beck (near Osmotherly). Note: we already run training sessions for CLOK Juniors, so they should preferably sign up for tailored Junior sessions rather than these Open sessions.

CLOK AGM

The CLOK AGM will be held on Thursday 15th October 7:00pm on Zoom. Further details will be sent out nearer the time and links to the agenda and officers' reports will be posted onto the CLOK website in the next few weeks. Members are encouraged to attend to help understand how the committee functions and the roles and responsibilities of the various officials and the help set the future direction of the club. If anyone wishes to submit any topics for discussion, please contact the secretary John Green (email).

"The Run In" podcast

There is a regular podcast all about orienteering called "The Run In". With over 30 episodes to date, The Run In is made with club orienteers in mind, and gives you a fun and chatty insight into the experiences of orienteers from the UK and beyond.

It is produced by Katherine Bett (who as a journalist and commentator, gets to the heart of the guest's story) and Will Gardner (who as a member of the GB team, brings his international experience). Recent highlights include:
  • Georgia Jones (OROX) on pitching orienteering to newcomers whilst setting up the University of Exeter club
  • Young star of international orienteering Simona Aebersold on getting really nervous before major races and how she distracts herself
  • Kirstin Maxwell (RR) on trying to train with vitamin deficiencies, and finding new trails in lockdown
  • Ben Mitchell (SBOC) on why he started mapping, and making maps for the JK 2021
New full-length episodes are released every fortnight, and they have recently added some quick-fire "Sprint" episodes, meaning there's something new to listen to every week. You can listen on desktop via Stitcher or on your phone (available on most major podcast apps: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Podcast Addict etc. - just search "The Run In"). They are also on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Katherine Bett (SN) and Will Gardner (OD) hope you enjoy listening!

Ranking points still suspended

When lockdown started, British Orienteering froze the ranking lists. Despite events restarting, British Orienteering have decided the current ranking points system remains suspended. This is because there are still difficulties for many clubs in restarting events, primarily in gaining land permissions. Therefore access to ranking events is not easily available to all, which could make the rankings unfair. British Orienteering are looking at tentatively reinstating rankings from January 2021, subject to the events situation at the time. For the full announcement, see here.

Upcoming events

For many events there is NO entry on the day, and you MUST pre-enter. Also several events still indicate that permissions are pending. Please see individual club websites for more details.

Note that while social gatherings of more than six people are banned in England from 14 September, the government have confirmed that organised sports and activities that have been through return to play protocols can continue, as can organised outdoor sports and physical activity events. British Orienteering have confirmed this includes orienteering, so long as events follow their COVID-19 safe guidance.
