September Newsletter

Hello from ADR - we hope you had a wonderful summer and were able to stay healthy and enjoy the beautiful weather.  We had a fairly slow summer, with few adoptions and new dogs.  This allowed us to focus on our medical dogs.  We currently have two dachshunds that we, along with our volunteers and partners, are working hard to get them the best life possible.  Many of you have been following Tasha and Blue's progress on our Facebook site and we have more updates in the next section.

ADR wouldn't be able to help out so many dogs without the help of the people, vets and organizations who give us discounts and work so hard with us.  We also couldn't do it without the support of donors, so thank you to everyone who has pitched in to help out our dogs - it means the world to them, sometime literally.

If you have any suggestions for the newsletter please email adrescuenews@gmail.com

Tasha:
Tasha came to us with her best friend Gus and they are totally devoted to each other.  Gus is blind and Tasha has back issues and Tasha has been a real trooper working hard on improving her mobility.  We learned a couple weeks ago that her best prognosis is to learn to motor around in a full quad wheelchair.  ADR is working with @eddieswheels to get her a custom wheelchair to help her out.  Once it arrives we will be looking for a home for her and Gus who are willing and able to continue working with her and meet their medical needs.  Anyone wanting to help out with the costs of Tasha's wheelchair can make a donation to adrpresident@gmail.com

Blue:
Blue was with us earlier this year and happily found his forever home.  Sadly, within a week of joining his new family he came down with a mystery illness where he couldn't open his jaw to eat or drink.  ADR stepped in to help out and after many sleepless nights, trips to the vet and lots of testing he was diagnosed with MMM.  Blue is valiantly fighting and making progress but is still struggling.  ADR will be here to help him until he is back to full health.  Anyone wanting to help out with the costs of Blue's testing and treatment can make a donation to adrpresident@gmail.com

Dodger's List
We recently recieved this note from our friends at Doger's list.  For those who are not familiar with them, this group provides resources regarding IVDD - something dachshund owners know all too well.  Take a peek at their note below, and consider helping them out if you can.

A note from the founder of Dodger;s list;
A handful of volunteer staff does the most wondrous things with a skinny budget. Some things, however, require cash for us to accomplish. Things like paying for a website, printing educational IVDD literature, maintaining an ad free IVDD Care and Support Forum, placing ads in event catalogs and magazines, etc.

IF you have the means to help with $8.00, our Digest volunteers will supply you with a years worth of reading with the fun and informative quarterly Dodgers Digest! To order dodgerslist.com/dodgers-digest-2/ or you can paypal to lstowe1@tx.rr.com Next issue is due to be sent October 1.
If you have already subscribed and your subscription is due, you have received an email from me.

Digest not your cup of tea?
1. Check out other ways to help us: dodgerslist.com/aid-effort/ We have a store with lots of cute items for you and your IVDD dog.
2. Be ready to help - hand out free IVDD literature Order some for your vet and owners you meet: dodgerslist.com/free-literature-2/

Updates on our Current Dogs

Gus and Tasha will be looking for a loving home able to help out with their medical needs as soon as Tasha has her new wheels.  Let us know if you think they would be the perfect addition to your family.

Wheat King is a 4 year old male who is currently working with his foster family on reactivity and playing nicely with others.  He has made quick progress and is now ready for adoption.

Boris is an amazing guy who is opening up to more people every day.  This monster of a standard dachshund (over 30 lbs) is now looking for his forever home and will make an awesome addition to someone'sfamily.

Sophie and Higgins decided that they no longer want to hang out together and we are looking for separate homes for them.  Higgins is working on charming his foster family and Sophie is looking for a new family to call her own.
Happy Tails and Fond Remembrances

Fond Remembrances
It’s with a heavy heart that we share that two ADR family members have recently crossed the rainbow bridge.

Noodle
Noodle came into ADR care about 5 years ago and passed away at the age of 16. This standard boy was so sweet and happy. He touched everyone's soul as he met them. Noodle's family shared this with us:
Noodle was a wonderful addition to our family. He was an amazing dog with a love for ball and his people. He was our protector and always needed to be close to us; he was the best at cuddling. Ball was life for Noodle and if we were busy he would entertain himself by pushing the ball with his nose and run after it to fetch and repeat.
Noodle was always excited to tag along in whatever adventure we were on, weather it be camping, kayaking on the river, checking out waterfalls in the mountains or road trips to hang out with family. He was the best travel buddy.
Noodle will never be forgotten and always missed.

Tony
It is with broken hearts that we share that Tony, our 13 year old silver dapple, passed away last month.  Tony was the sweetest boy who loved his brother Bob and new dad Tim.  Sadly, his new family didn't have much time with him as he passed quickly due to lung cancer.  We are grateful to have known this special soul and to Tim and Bob for filling the time he had left with happiness and being there for him at the end.

Feature Volunteer
 Kerrie and Damian Wilson.
Over the past while Kerrie and her son Damian have been fostering Tasha and Gus. With a major scare and full paralysis of Tasha, they were calm, cool and able to take care of her special needs. Damian, 14 years old, has really stepped up to the tasks needed and they have given the two dogs a safe place to be and even taking care of all of Tasha’s special needs and getting her to all of her therapy appointments. With Tasha now having her fitting done, we are patiently awaiting her quad cart to come in. Thanks so much to you guys for opening your hearts and home for Tasha and Gus to play and be loved.  Your care for them is wonderful, and we are proud of you for all your efforts and work making sure they are cared for!

FUN FACT:
Allergies aren't just for springtime.  In fact, the majority of dogs scratch and rub more than usual in the fall. Some dogs may also have runny eyes.” Fall allergies are those that occur from pollen released exclusively in the fall season. In reality, the environment teems with allergens year-round, and thus can be problematic for sensitive dogs.  Always keep an eye out for extra scratching and running eyes or nose in case your dog has allergies you should be treating.

Tom's Thoughts, Tips and Tricks..

This month we would like to share a different side of our rescue, and something from our view on the inside of how it all works, and how Covid is affecting us.

In the last four years since staff changes etc, we have gone from an average of 25-30 dogs and in the last two years increased to 64 and 66 dogs.  It’s been a busy few years and lots of fun building new relationships with new families.  With Covid amongst us this year things have really gotten shaken up for us, and business has gone in reverse in many ways.

With people staying home more often, far less dogs have come into our care.  Definitely a wonderful thing to happen, but on the flip side, we have gotten a multiplication of adoption applications in and no dogs to home.  Since April we have gotten over 200 applications and far more inquiries and questions sent our way.  With the amount of adoption inquiries during Covid, it makes it extra difficult to sift through and find the best homes for the few dogs we do have in our care.  To top it off, the dogs we have had in our care have had odd and rare health concerns, ranging from Masticatory Muscle Myositis (MMM) to full paralysis on all 4 legs.  It’s been an odd year, and one we can all learn a few things while trucking through life in it.

We also want to remind everyone out there about what Covid can also do to us when it’s over.  Getting a pet is a HUGE responsibility.  We are all facing a hard time lately, and while being home may open the ideas of bringing a pet into our lives, please don’t forget the amount of responsibility required to have a pet, but that when things go back to normal, to be aware that it will take extra work to keep up to a pet.  We encourage people to think into the future and what you picture your life as.  We are scared at the amount of dogs may be coming into our care once things go back to normal, and families may not have the time they had to care for their pets.  Don’t forget, and be responsible when making the decision to bring another member into your family.

The staff at ADR want to thank everyone for stepping up and doing extra fundraisers for us, for the continued support even during tough times.   We would also like to ask for patience.  With all of us also enduring these tough times, we are all volunteers, and with the extra admin work etc, we are doing our absolute best to accommodate everyone’s wishes and to take care of the dogs we do have.

Thanks to you all for the continued support year after year, the solid encouragement and the amazing updates and homes. We cannot do what we do without you all and all that you do.
