Secretary Su Issues Labor Day Statement
California Secretary of Labor Julie A. Su issues the following statement on Labor Day: “Labor Day is not just a holiday, it’s a call to action, and we hear that call. We remain committed to returning millions of Californians to higher-quality jobs, ensuring effective enforcement and outreach, and supporting young workers who are entering the workforce at a time where, absent the right interventions, they could see long-term harms to income, security, and health.”Read more here.

EDD Provides Summary of California Economy and Current In-Demand Jobs
This year, Labor Day unfolds against the backdrop of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Though the widespread economic effects of this event have resulted in record-setting job losses and unemployment, the Employment Development Department (EDD) has identified occupations in California’s current economy that are in demand and in need of workers. Unemployment Insurance Benefits Issued to Impacted Workers Nears $77 Billion

California workers struggling through this historic COVID-19 pandemic and its economic impact have received a total of $76.9 billion in benefits to help support their families as well as businesses in their communities. Over the last six months, the California Employment Development Department reports processing a total of approximately 11.9 million claims between the regular Unemployment Insurance (UI) program and extension claims, as well as the separate Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program.
