My husband Ron and I joined the Wintonbury Land Trust in a heartbeat when we moved to Bloomfield because we valued the open space and farms it preserves. A few months later Chip Caton, who then was Vice President, invited me to help plan a party to celebrate the acquisition of Hawk Hill Farm. I met wonderful people who cared deeply about things that mattered to me ... and I was hooked!
For five years now I have volunteered on the planning committee for Wine & Dine, our major fundraising event. The second year Ron and I attended and had a ball! Dave and Diane Kopp were magnificent dinner hosts, and we made new friends. Last year we teamed up with friends Martha and Woody Hess to host a dinner ourselves. What fun it was inviting fellow community members to break bread and share stories of why they support the Land Trust's environmental mission.
I'm happy to be planning this year’s Take-Home Harvest Dinner from our farms to you. The manager - a former chef at The Pond House - and his executive chef at Gillette Ridge Golf Club are donating their time and expertise to craft a memorable meal for us. So Wine & Diners can count on a gourmet feast that includes local produce and entree options such as organic chickens, prepared in a safe and healthy manner.
Of course, we wish we could gather in welcoming Bloomfield homes to meet new friends as we have in past years. Yet, we can feel good about staying safe, eating well, and doing good.
On September 26 I'll be among the volunteers in green aprons greeting each participant at the pick-up site with a picnic basket filled with dinner, dessert, wine, a wildflower bouquet, and more. Though I will be masked and gloved, I will be happy to see so many new and familiar faces coming to support the good work of the Wintonbury Land Trust.
