Remembering & Honoring Our Fallen
On September 11, 2001 America saw its biggest terrorist attack to date. What started as an average day ended with the destruction of the World Trade Center, the collapse of the Pentagon, and a ruined field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Four planes had been hijacked to use in terrorist attacks, resulting in more than 3,000 deaths including civilians, foreign guests, and first responders.
It was one of the biggest travesties we have seen, but also a moment where our nation came together to help those in need. Out of the wreckage, our nation created the Department of Homeland Security and the USA Patriot Act to help protect our nation from foreign and domestic acts of terrorism. The US even embarked on the longest military campaign in history to fight back against enemies hiding in Afghanistan.
Today we use September 11 to commemorate all those we have lost, and to give thanks to all of our first responders. Some honor the day by flying flags at half mast or participating in moments of silence.
