Happy week two of GNI’s Fall Reset, which is all about your living space. More time at home means there's probably room to align your space with your evolving priorities, whether you're optimizing your home for comfort, work, or school. That specifically means tackling small changes that can make a big impact.

Note from the Guest Editor

Hi <<First Name>>,

I’m sending you a big hello from my sofa right now. I’m Taryn Williford, the cleaning and lifestyle editor at Apartment Therapy, and I am stoked to be guest editing this week’s edition of GNI. It’s September in Atlanta and while it’s not quite sweater weather just yet (it’ll be 90 degrees by lunchtime), the new season is waxing, and it’s impossible to ignore that fresh sensation that fall always brings.

It’s a welcome feeling in a year when the days and weeks have been blurring together. You’ve probably been thinking a lot lately about how well (or not) your home serves you. Consider these last few months the final stretch towards giving yourself the room you need to comfortably work, grow, and play at home. Ride the autumn high like a new box of school supplies and give yourself the confidence to do some decluttering, cleaning, and organizing.

I know that motivation isn’t enough, though—you also need some tricks. Every home is different, but whenever I’m coaching Apartment Therapy readers through their own homekeeping projects (like the free 20-day Decluttering Cure program we kicked off this week), these are the problem areas that seem to come up for everyone:

👗 “I don’t have enough room for all my clothes!” Instead of looking for things to eliminate from your wardrobe, start by choosing which clothes to keep: Take everything out of your closet, then fill it back up with the things you love most until all your available storage is full. Then, you know you have to eliminate the rest. You can usually squeeze in a few more things by using slimmer hangers. And store off-season clothes in under-bed boxes—I use these rolling ones because wheels (these no-wheel storage bins are beaut too) with vacuum storage bags for bulky winter clothes.

🚽 “My bathroom is seriously lacking in storage.” In a small bathroom, you have to get creative. An over-the-door organizer is a classic that works in so many different spaces, and a slim rolling cart can squeeze between the toilet and the vanity or tub to give you some room for products and styling tools. If you crave something a little more permanent, you can’t go wrong with wall-mounted shelves; I added a few of these narrow ones around my bathroom for toiletries, but I’ve also seen some people mount a shelf above their door frame, or between the mirror and the sink to eke out extra storage for towels and products.

😬 “My kitchen cabinets are overflowing.” The kitchen is prime real estate, so your once-in-a-while stuff—like a turkey roasting pan or stand mixer—can absolutely be stored in another room to give you space to cook in the kitchen day to day. (I keep both on a shelf in the laundry room.) Then get smart about maximizing your cabinets: A turntable gives you better access to deep storage, while shelf risers and file sorters allow you to store things vertically. And I promise you’ll never regret investing in a uni-tasker to organize your water bottles or food storage containers—it’s one of life’s cheap little luxuries.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to shoot me a DM on Instagram! (Talking about organizing is my second-favorite thing to do. My first-favorite is dancing to Harry Styles music.) And remember: Celebrities are not just like us, and your pantry does not have to look like Busy Philipps’ pantry, but a few small changes can make a big impact on how you feel in your space each day. That's the good stuff.

Happy housekeeping,
Taryn Williford | @tarynwilliford

what our team is recommending this week
weekend tip: work on one small corner that brings you comfort (via @apron_saint)
  1. The little lifesaver for moving during a pandemic... 📦 "We recently moved and can't recommend reusable bins enough (we used Lend-a-Box, but Gorilla Bins is similar). After the bins get delivered, you just pack up your things, move, and then you schedule them for pick-up after you've unpacked everything in your new place. You can also rent dollies, packaging paper for fragile items, and more — it's eco-friendly and makes the process feel so seamless." - Alisha, GNI CEO & Founder

  2. The perfect playlist for a home project... 🎵 "I recently made this ‘Grapefruit Soda’ playlist which is full of citrusy and upbeat tunes — I've been using it as the perfect motivation for a Sunday morning reorganization project, or more recently, a kitchen renovation!" - Olivia, Community Team

  3. If you're thinking of spicing up your home fitness routine this fall... 🤸‍♀️ obé has every kind of class type you can imagine on their platform — from Pilates to Yoga to Dance Cardio. It's all the joy of a boutique fitness class from home. Use code GIRLSNIGHTIN to get 50% off your first month of obé (in addition to a 7-day free trial) just in time for their launch of LIVE evening classes on 9/14. #SPONSORSTHING
  4. If you're in the market for a vacuum... ✨ "Yes, we have a lot more time at home in quarantine. No, I don't want to spend it vacuuming. Enter: My new robot vacuum." - Katrina, GNI Partnerships & Marketing Team (Ed note: Try this one if you prefer a push vacuum — it's a gamechanger.)

  5. To give old pieces new life... 🤗 "I've been recently feeling the push-pull of wanting to update my apartment and not being too spendy during this weird time. I've found a lot of comfort and joy in following some small shops, hobbyists, and secondhand sellers on Instagram. I shared some favorites here." - Tyler, Content Team

  6. A small tip for customizing your space... 🎨 "I didn't know that you could buy digital copies of prints on Etsy until very recently, but you can and I did! You just buy the file, and print at your local UPS/FedEx or save it for later use. It's easy and still a way to support artists you love without busting your budget." - Jenna, Content Team
  7. To bring the outdoors in... 🌿 "I've never seen a houseplant like this before, but when I laid eyes on this one from one of our Lounge Partner Perks, Rooted, I knew it would introduce the serenity (and a little green) that I was looking to add to my space. Any other Polyscias Fruticosa enthusiasts out there? Send me any tips you've got here!" - Mary Anne, Community Team

What We're Reading for Book Club: 📚

We're looking forward to taking a deep dive with you into questions about how science and faith intersect as the story of young, Ghanaian-American protagonist Gifty unfolds. What We're Making With Our Hands: 🌼
If you're looking for an excuse to buy lots of beads (!!!), might we suggest this daisy chain bracelet DIY? It's just the right combination of simple and satisfying, making it an easy and enjoyable no-screens weekend project. Alternative idea: Skip the bracelet and make it a mask chain, so you don't leave home without yours.

What We're Watching for a Brain Break: ❤️
"I started watching The Home Edit on Netflix last night because I needed an I-dont-want-to-think-about-anything evening. I thought that this review was spot-on — I found myself way more drawn to the celebrity components than I thought I'd be (looking at Rachel Zoe's unbelievable closet was apparently the distraction I needed). This show shouldn't be used as a source of comparison, but it is a fun brain break if you like seeing things organized more beautifully than you could ever imagine." - Carey, Content Team

What We're Anticipating Next Week: 👀

The Great Pottery Throw Down is coming across the pond to the U.S. via HBO Max next week (starting September 17). If you like Great British Bakeoff and love making things with your hands (or watching others do it), this one's for you. Watch the trailer here, but be warned: you may pick up the inspo for a new winter hobby in the process.
