The Fall 2020 issue of Nebraska Quarterly, a magazine produced by the Nebraska Alumni Association, is devoted to food and features Department faculty and the Dairy Store. Featured in the issue are Dr. Jennifer Auchtung, Dr. Byron Chavez, and Angela Garbacz (wife of Russell Parde). The magazine is available in print and online at  https://go.unl.edu/3kss
Lisbeth Vallecilla Yepez (UNL MS in Food Science and Technology and now BSE PhD student of Dr. Mark Wilkins) earned the John C. Nye Graduate Fellowship from ASABE. The John C. Nye Graduate Fellowship is dedicated to expanding the diversity of our Society. It was designed to encourage underrepresented minority PhD student participation in ASABE and aid minorities pursuing doctorate degrees in agricultural and biological engineering.
Dr. Deandrae Smith, a recent Food Science PhD grad from U of Arkansas, has joined the Department and FPC as a postdoc in the role as Senior Scientist, Sanitation and Food Safety.  She will be involved not only with FPC interns, quality control, auditing, and client projects but also in providing instruction for the 3+1 program.
Dr. Jeff Price, joins the Department on September 14 as a Research Assistant Professor with responsibilities as Associate Director of the Gnotobiotic Mouse Program.  He most recently was associated with the Thayer lab at UNMC. His PhD degree is in Immunology from Washington University and postdoc experience was with the NIH.
Congratulations to Dr. Ozan Cifti for his LIAB (Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology International Award in Bioinnovation). LIAB honors ground-breaking research all around the world in domains such as bioavailability, transport and effectiveness of secondary plant compounds on a cellular level, anticancer natural compounds, etc. This award is given every 3 years. Dr. Ozan will be attending a virtual award ceremony presented from  Luxembourg.
Dr. Bing Wang was recruited as Food Safety Consultant for the Food Safety and Quality Unit, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation for two years, 2020-2022, and will provide technical support in the preparation and delivery of the FAO’s Provision of Scientific Advice on Food Safety. Dr. Wang is currently assisting the FAO regional office for Asia and the Pacific region to plan and lead a risk profile project for a newly emerging foodborne illness in countries in Southeast Asia
The National Science Foundation has released new requirements for approved submissions of biographical sketches and approved and pending support documents. The use of an NSF-approved format will go into effect for new proposals submitted or due on or after October 5, 2020. Responsibilities for this position include preparing sterile food, water and bedding for the mice, entering the sterile supplies into isolators in an aseptic manner, performing periodic microbiological quality-control checks to ensure sterile isolator environments and assisting lab personnel with various mouse-related tasks.. Rate of pay is $9.00/hour. Applicants must be able to commit to working a minimum of 10 hrs/week Mon – Fri; weekend hours may be possible. No prior experience required; training will be provided. This position is available for Fall 2020 and possibly Spring 2021.

Food Microbiology Intern

Corbion is looking for an Intern who is currently or recently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate degree program with an interest and aptitude to work in the ingredient solutions industry to conduct exploratory, literature-based research on the raw poultry industry. This internship is designed to be both educational and practical. In this position, the intern will learn how to take skills she or he may have acquired in school related to searching, analyzing, and summarizing scientific literature, and apply them to create a comprehensive, chaptered document on raw poultry from an industry and scientific perspective. He or she will gain a better understanding of the role that a student/entry level team member can play in a corporate setting, and be better prepared to work in the arena of ingredient solutions. This position will be based off-site, with biweekly meetings onsite or via teleconference with the Intern's supervisor.

Assistant Professor in Bakery Science

Kansas State University

The successful candidate will develop an innovative teaching program, encompassing both existing and new undergraduate and graduate courses (including online offerings) covering subject matter related to the science of baking. The successful candidate will be expected to obtain extramural support for and direct an undergraduate and graduate research program focused on relevant problems in the baking industry. Potential areas of research include, but are not limited to, bakery processes, ingredient functionality, product safety, and quality. The successful candidate will be expected to serve as a critical faculty member of the Bakery Science Program and actively recruit new students. The candidate will advise undergraduate students and participate in undergraduate and graduate student club activities, as well as contribute to departmental, college and university committees, and appropriate professional/industry associations.

Bioprocessing Laboratory Specialist

Supervise and perform the day-to-day research, operations, and safety oversight of the IBRL-PPP and laboratory. Schedule and prepare for research trials by students, faculty, and outside researchers. Serve as primary research specialist for operating and maintaining extrusion research equipment in facility.
Ensure equipment is available and ready for use. Provide expertise to faculty, students, and outside users performing research to ensure safe and successful use of facility equipment, including coordinating without outside contractors as necessary.
