What to do when winter comes early...
It's early September, and as residents of a high elevation community, we're never too surprised with a September frost or snow. This month we will have a Putting Your Garden to Bed for Winter presentation available to watch on your own time, in place of our monthly "Extension Thursday." September must be the month of horticulture themed webinars and events, so we have a bunch of opportunities below gathered for you along with some activities to enjoy indoors on those rainy/snowy/muddy days. Let's get started...!
Boredom Busters for Adults
  1. Recipes for your early September Garden Harvest - If you had to do an early harvest of your veggie garden in anticipation of that first freeze, like I had to, you may be wondering what to make. Visit the Colorado Proud Recipes archives as there's a bunch of ideas, especially among the side dishes to prepare with your veggies!
  2. Saving Seeds from Vegetables - Webinar on September 23, 2020 from 11 am – 1 pm: Saving seeds from your vegetable garden allows you to save money and grow well-adapted plants to your area. Learn how to save seeds from some popular vegetables, seed saving resources that can be helpful, and how to store seeds in your home. This webinar is offered by CSU Extension Pueblo County. Registration required by Sept 21st, 5pm. Register here.
  3. September Garden Topics - Utah State University Extension has a monthly gardening almanac to keep on top of yard work throughout the season. Some parts of Utah have weather and seasons similar to ours in Clear Creek County. Read through their list of September gardening tasks.
  4. CoNPS 2020 Virtual Annual Conference: Peaks to Prairies Plants in a Land of Extremes - The Colorado Native Plant Society holds an annual conference, and this year it has gone virtual. It will be hosted online with a variety of speakers covering a variety of topics from Sept 18-20th.   5. Intro to Grape Growing | A Virtual Seminar - Sunday, September 20 1:00pm-2:30pm MST Join CSU’s Viticulture Extension Specialist, Miranda Ulmer, for a snapshot of what it is like to grow grapes in Colorado. Learn about proper site selection, variety selection, and management practices as well as the pests and diseases you may encounter along the way. Class fee is $25. Register online.
  6. Advanced Bonsai Design - Thu, Sept. 17, 6-9pm. An onsite paid event at the Denver Botanic Gardens at 1007 York Street, Denver. Bonsai Specialist Larry Jackel will lead a demonstration and discussion of techniques used to develop wild/collected material from the Front Range into bonsai. Additionally, watch three artists from the Rocky Mountain Bonsai Society develop plant material as Larry describes and discusses their unique work.
  7. Roadmap to Preparedness Webinar presented by Jeffco Extension, and United Policyholders - Tips from the Trenches: Does Your Safety Net Have Holes? Join this webinar to learn what disaster survivors wish they had known about insurance, why fine print matters, how to save money during the pandemic, and what to do if you are dropped by your insurer. Thursday September 10th 6-7pm MT. Register.

September "Extension Thursday" - Top 10 Tips for Putting Your Mountain Garden to Bed
 
It's about the season to wrap things up and prepare for our cold seasons ahead. Maybe you've harvested your veggies, berries, and herbs (or hopefully protected them from the frost)! But what else is there to do to ensure your garden gets a great start in 2021?

We are hosting a different "Extension Thursday" experience in September. It will be a prerecorded presentation and reference materials delivered virtually to you during the last full week of the month, September 21st. The intention is for you to be able to watch the presentation and go through the materials and fact sheets whenever it works best for you.

Boredom Busters for Kids and Teens
  1. Learn about Weather with NASA's Climate Kids - Get answers to questions like "What's the difference betweeen weather and climate?" Get activities/ideas to learn about clouds, how to make clouds, and more. Visit the climate and weather page with activities and projects.
  2. Weather At Home Science Experiments - If weather can keep us indoors, it can entertain us too. Local KDVR Meteorologist Jessica Lebel has put together a list of weather-themed science experiments to do from home including how to make a barometer, thermometer, and even how to make homemade snow!
  3. 4-H STEM Challenge: Mars Base Camp - The race to land humans on Mars is on! The 2020 4‑H STEM Challenge will explore sending a mission to Mars with the activity, Mars Base Camp. Developed by Google and Virginia Cooperative Extension, Mars Base Camp is a collection of activities that teaches kids ages 8-14 STEM skills like mechanical engineering, physics, computer science, and agriculture. Insight from Mars, the online portion of the 2020 STEM Challenge, is now available, get started now!
  4. Go PLOGGING as a family - Join the 2nd annual Keep America Beautiful® TrashDash "plogging" event on Sept. 20, 2020 - Plogging is the combination of picking up litter while jogging. No matter your location or time zone, you can participate in the global movement via social media to end litter. To join, pick a location to plog in your community, such as a neighborhood, park, beach, or trail. We encourage you to post your results on Instagram by tagging @KeepAmericaBeautiful and including the hashtags #DoBeautifulThings and #TrashDash.
  5. Chatfield Farms Corn Maze Opens Friday, Sept. 18 - The Corn Maze celebrates its 20th anniversary! Get lost in the 7-acre Corn Maze at Chatfield Farms. You must purchase a ticket online for a specific date and time to visit. Tickets are not available onsite.

Garden Corner: Where to Send Your Plant, Weeds, Pests for Identification


"Bring us your diseased, Your stressed, Your insect-infested masses, Yearning to be diagnosed…"

The Jeffco Plant Diagnostic Clinic at the Jefferson County CSU Extension office is our nearest lab location to bring samples for diagnosis, including insect ID and plant ID. You may drop-off (mask required) or mail-in a sample for laboratory evaluation by staff. Learn more about the Jeffco Plant Diagnostic Clinic on their website.
