Last week, Russ Muse took us through James 1:5-8. Here are some key points:
- James invites us to see trials differently - think about trials differently - respond to trials differently.
- Wisdom is knowledge rightly applied.
- Our default mode in trials is "God, get me out of this trial!" But if we know trials will help us become whole and complete, why ask to get out of it?
- The critical component is JOY.
- A fiery trial reveals who we truly are. Trials aren't transformative, they are revelatory.
- We cannot ask for joy in a trial while asking to be released from the trial - that is a double-minded request. Focus on the end result of growth and wholeness and ask God for joy and peace within it.

James: What's Next
This Sunday, Nate will teach us from James 1:9-12. To print out a manuscript version for notes/personal study, click here. (The document is being built week-by-week with the current passage on top.) Also, Sandi Yaggie will provide a related puzzle for kids (and kids-at-heart) at the back table.

#SERVEMAULDIN
Our current project is to show support and appreciation to our law enforcement personnel at the Mauldin Police Department (including dispatchers, office staff, etc.) On Sundays, blank gift bags and markers are available. Please take a few minutes to write a personal note of thanks and/or prayers and words of support (kids can draw on the bags!) As Russ noted, please pray prior to writing. We were told by one employee, "What was written was exactly what I needed to hear" during an initiative at Christmas. God can use your words in the lives of others!
Part of our online church family? You can reply to this email with your sentiment and we will write it on a bag for you!
The church will fill the bag with helpful and enjoyable items and they will be delivered to employees and officers at the end of the month.

Reading Scripture - IN PERSON!
The River will be offering its foundational class, Reading Scripture, at Resurrection Church, 900 North Main Street, Greer, SC 29651 for six weeks, starting Tuesday, September 22, 7:00-8:30pm. The number of participants will be limited in order to ensure Covid safety precautions. To learn more and register, click here.
We highly recommend that all our church family take this course which will equip you to read and understand the Bible for yourself. Unlike some Bible study methods and books, this class starts with what you already know about reading and applies it to reading Scripture, rather than starting with what you don’t know. The class is filled with “lab time” where you will experience the joy of personal discovery in reading Scripture.
One participant wrote: "We all left the class wanting to read the Bible well, wanting to know God better.” Another commented: “I didn’t think this kind of course was something you would call fun. But I can’t remember having as much fun in reading Scripture. This is why I don’t typically go to ‘Bible studies,’ because they’re not like this!”
