"
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless God's holy name.”  Psalm 103: 1

Friends, the psalm above is the inspiration for one of my favorite modern worship songs, “10,000 Reasons.” If you don’t know it, you can listen to one of the many versions of this song on Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you stream music. Here are the verses:

The sun comes up
It's a new day dawning
It's time to sing Your song again
Whatever may pass
And whatever lies before me
Let me be singing
When the evening comes

You're rich in love
And You're slow to anger
Your name is great
And Your heart is kind
For all Your goodness
I will keep on singing
Ten thousand reasons
For my heart to find

And on that day
When my strength is failing
The end draws near
And my time has come
Still my soul will
Sing Your praise unending
Ten thousand years
And then forevermore

Psalm 103 and this song both remind me of the first question of the Westminster Catechism that I had to memorize in 4th grade: “What is the chief end of humankind? Humankind’s chief end is to glorify God and enjoy God forever.” We are created to glorify our Creator, and are meant to enjoy God - to sing God’s praises with our lips and our lives. This looks different from lip to lip and life to life, but our purpose is the same, despite our differences. We bring glory to God when we live our best lives (and I imagine even our okayest lives with heartfelt intentions). We bring glory to God when we seek to be about the things God has called us to be about - justice, compassion, mercy, equity. We bring glory to God when we participate in the mission, the passion, the vocation to which God has called us and for which God has gifted us. Even now, 6 months into this pandemic that has altered our individual, communal, and global ways of life, we are called to glorify God, to seek out “ten thousand reasons” to praise God, to remember as the psalmist writes, "the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting” (103:17). My hope and prayer for you this week is that you may feel the gift of God’s love, and that you might consider how you bring glory to God in your daily life - and how we as a congregation are bringing glory to God these days - even in the midst of these trying and painful circumstances. I’d love to hear from you - drop me a line at
katie@pleasanthillpc.org or call me at 904.635.0990. As always, I hope to serve you the best I can, so if there’s anything you need, or if there’s someone in need of a call from me, please let me know.

Peace,
Pastor Katie Day
