School Value for Term 3
Mana Whakahaere/Responsibility

Kia ora tatou,

It has been almost two weeks since we have come out of level 3 lockdown and students are settling back into the rhythm of school life. A positive that has come out of the lockdown is that we have achieved our attendance targets with a daily attendance rate between 94% and 96%. Our school continues to observe good hygiene practices and I would like to thank all of our parents for dropping off and collecting their children outside the school gates. Please remember if you need to see a teacher or collect your child, one needs to sign in at the main office.

One of the comments I frequently get, when asking students about their lockdown experience is that they were bored. I am fine with that response, as boredom can be a good thing. John Spencer in Educational Leadership, December 2018 describes the gift of boredom. He talks about two kinds of boredom:

Mind-wandering – a lack of stimulus when completing tasks that require very little mental attention, like taking a shower or a long walk;

Tedious – when one is required to focus cognitively on uninteresting or meaningless tasks.

Researchers have found that both can increase creativity. Emerging from being bored, people often engage in more divergent thinking, make connections between seemingly unrelated topics and generate creative ideas. Unusual and unexpected thoughts arise. One problem in today’s world is that we’ve succeeded in reducing boredom through constant digital stimulation. It is not that people are unable to do deeply creative work but that they don’t experience the mental rest of mind-wandering boredom that may be necessary to engage in such work.

We are in the process of planning for next year. If you have a child in year 6 please remember to complete the Return to School survey, for any other year levels not returning next year, please let the office know as soon as possible.

Nga mihi

Kind regards,

Gary Pasfield

Waimauku Netball
Sadly the season has come to an end with the latest round of Covid restrictions and we have taken the difficult decision to not hold a formal prizegiving this year. We will be refunding most of the subs paid. The reduced subs for Year 3 and 4 are $35 and for Years 5 to 8 are $40. This means that we will be refunding $65 to year 3 and 4 players and $70 to year 5 to 8 players. This amount includes the dress deposit and will be paid after the dresses are returned on team photo day, scheduled for 28th October. Kaipara Netball are looking at the possibility of running twilight or Saturday netball in term 4. We will keep you posted.

Maori Language Week/Te Wiki o te Reo Māori
Next week we will be celebrating Maori Language Week with fun activities, games and songs.  We will have words of the day challenges where tamariki try to avoid the English version of commonly used words to win prizes.  If parents want to play along at home here are our challenge words:

The End of Bubble School
Our bubble students celebrated their last day with a fun bread baking class with
Mrs Purchase.
The work on Rooms 5-8 is well underway and our students will be able to start Term 4 in their newly refurbished classrooms.  These classes will have better flow to the covered area with bigger doors and new decks.
This photo shows the school how it was many years ago, with Room 5 being part of the original buildings.
PTA
Hello families!
Keeping it simple this week.  Hopefully, you have seen the call-out for volunteers to assist the PTA with Ag Day and have had a look at the times to see when you could jump in.  From next Monday 14 Sept, we will be on the hunt for grocery items for the amazing Ag Day Raffles which are SO popular, and raise quite a substantial amount of money for the school, thanks to our generous families and the local business community. There will be a theme for each day so keep an eye out for that info.  That's it folks.  Life is crazy enough right now so be kind and stay safe!

From Team PTA
