From the chairman:
The NEaT board met online on Tuesday 8 September. This was the first meeting after the summer and the fifth in 2020. We were honoured by a visit from NEaT member Johanna Liljenzin, who was just elected the chair of the board of the Federation of Authorized Translators in Sweden (Föreningen Auktoriserade Translatorer; see more below). She told us how the Federation was coping with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic: like many organizations, it has had to move events online, including, for the first time, a virtual AGM. The board members and Johanna enjoyed comparing notes about running an organization for Nordic language professionals and expressed hope that members of both organizations could meet in person in the future.
The board also finalized some details related to the Punctuation Points online panel discussion, which you should sign up for, if you haven’t already! As usual, we approved new members who had applied to join NEaT and heard what the five committees — Education, Communications, Cooperation, Professionalization and Events — have been working on.
We hope that you all had a relaxing summer and that the autumn has started well.

Whether punctuation makes you feel like this or it’s one of your favourite things, join the debate. With presenters born in the US and UK who work with English in a range of roles, we will cover how and when to use these different types of punctuation and the impacts they have.
The presenters are NEaT members Rebecca von Bonsdorff (English teacher and teacher trainer), Vanessa Fuller (instructor and revisor), and Kate Sotejeff-Wilson (translator, editor, and writing retreat facilitator).

The Finnish Association of Translators and Interpreters (SKTL) and Finnish trade union Kieliasiantuntijat ry (Language Experts) are holding this year’s event online and registration opens in September. Every 30 September, English PEN hosts a programme of talks, workshops and networking opportunities for literary translators. This year, ITD will be a day-long online programme. They have harnessed a move to the digital to deliver a longer programme of sessions and open the event to a larger audience. Tickets for ITD 2020 are now on sale at https://www.englishpen.org/international-translation-day/
FIT’s ITD poster competition received a record of 46 entries. The winning design came from Liza Gunenko and captures the importance of unity and solidarity to counterbalance the looming crisis. “This year, let us celebrate ITD as never before. Join together, while keeping a safe distance, in whatever way you can. Download the poster and share it to promote your celebrations.”

Partner organization introduction: Federation of Authorised Translators in Sweden
One of our peer organisations in the Nordics, the Federation of Authorised Translators in Sweden (Föreningen Auktoriserade Translatorer), is open to state-authorised translators in Sweden. It was formed in 1932 and is Sweden’s oldest translator federation. The Federation’s newly elected chairwoman of the board is Johanna Liljetzin, a fellow NEaT member.
According to the Federation’s website, its members possess unique competence and knowledge, perform all types of advanced translations, are bound by confidentiality prescribed in law and are under state supervision. They work in accordance with generally accepted professional ethical rules, are entitled to use Kammarkollegiet’s official translator’s stamp for verification of translations and represent more than 30 languages. The members undertake assignments from government agencies, companies and private individuals and represent professionalism, service, stability and reliability.
Certain translators are certified both into as well as from a language. Others are authorised to or from several languages. The state authorisation issued in Sweden is only valid for translations between Swedish and a foreign language.
