Hurricane Laura’s 140-mph, Category 4 winds considered nothing sacred, including houses of worship. While hundreds of thousands were left without power and water, perhaps just as devastating is the destruction of houses of worship, which often are central to the lives in a community.

4. As California burns, the winds arrive and the lights go out

Wildfires churned through bone-dry California today (Sept. 8) after a scorching Labor Day weekend that saw a dramatic airlift of more than 200 people trapped by flames and ended with the state's largest utility turning off power to 172,000 customers to try to prevent power lines and other equipment from sparking more fires.

5. Mississippi Baptist disaster relief crews mobilizing across Louisiana

Mississippi Baptist Disaster Relief (MBDR) teams were in the first wave of a large response of Southern Baptist Disaster Relief teams rolling into Louisiana after Hurricane Laura raked the state Aug. 27.

6. On this day in SBC history...

In 1969 - Arizona Convention Kills Proposal To Sell Hospital

After nearly five hours of debate, messengers to a special session of the Arizona Southern Baptist Convention voted 422-208 to keep two of its hospitals rather than sell them to a hospital chain. The convention turned down an offer from American Medicorp., Inc., to buy the Phoenix and Scottsdale Baptist Hospitals for $8 million in cash plus assuming outstanding liabilities of the two hospitals. Total purchase price would have been $12.6 million.

7. BP Sports Update

  • Lebron James and the Lakers took a 2-1 lead over the Houston Rockets last night in the western conference semis. Also, the Heat finished off the Bucks to advance to the Eastern Conference finals.
  • Billy Donovan has been let go as coach of the Thunder.
  • The NFL starts tomorrow night, and it really seems odd to be starting a season with zero preseason games.
