Foundations of Addressing Racism as a Public Health Crisis

This GEAR Group will explore the impact of and potential solutions for addressing racism in the context of chronic disease prevention and control. Eating well, being physically active, avoiding tobacco and excessive drinking, and getting regular health screenings are all only as accessible as the systems in which people live, work, learn, pray, and play are designed to be. In light of growing evidence, consensus, and awareness that consciously and unconsciously racist policies, programs, and attitudes impact health outcomes at the population level, state and territorial chronic disease practitioners will explore the role they are uniquely positioned to play in impacting change among their residents. Case presentations or proposals may highlight how chronic disease programs acknowledge and address racism, both institutionally and programmatically, or other related topics of interest to state participants.

Meeting dates are generally on Tuesdays, with one meeting on a Wednesday:
  • October 6, 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. ET
  • October 14, 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. ET
  • October 20, 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. ET
  • October 27, 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. ET
Please note that by submitting your registration, you commit to attending all four sessions if accepted. Because openings are limited, registration does not guarantee acceptance, you will receive a confirmation email to inform you of your admission. Registration will be open until noon on Sept. 16 or until all openings are filled, whichever is sooner.

How You'll Participate

As a GEAR Group member, you will be asked to prepare and present a 5-minute case presentation—this can pertain to something that your state is working on already or something under consideration related to the GEAR Group topic. It offers an opportunity to gather wisdom, feedback, and guidance from peers and a subject matter expert on current or planned efforts.

GEAR Groups are powered by peer-to-peer support; therefore members are asked to participate in all four meetings. Participation in each GEAR Group is limited to 10 states. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Please visit the NACDD GEAR Group page for more information and to register.

These are not webinars and will not be recorded.
About the GEAR Groups

Generate, Educate, Activate, Respond (GEAR) Groups are peer-to-peer, case-based, action learning opportunities for state chronic disease practitioners. They are offered periodically and designed to catalyze planning for longer-term state-level action. Participants can expand knowledge of pressing topics, develop leadership skills, and network with other public health professionals at state health departments.

GEAR Groups use the University of New Mexico’s ECHO model™, a virtual “All Teach / All Learn” approach to professional development. Using Zoom, GEAR Groups will engage up to 10 states with a facilitator and strategist to explore emerging or long-standing chronic disease prevention and control topics. GEAR Groups meet four times- once a week for 90 minutes each. Meetings are facilitated conversations among participants requiring preparation and active participation. Sessions are not recorded educational webinars.
