Teaching & Learning News

DCAL's Director of Online Program and Strategy Joshua Kim recently published a new ebook "The Low-Density University: 15 Scenarios for Higher Education," from Johns Hopkins University Press. Kim co-authored the book with Eddie Maloney, executive director of The Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship at Georgetown University. It is available for free on Project Muse (no subscription needed).

"There is no learning happening unless there is an intentional, meaningful reflection attached to the experience." - Tania Convertini, Rome LSA+ program director. This winter the Rome LSA+ students took on a five day cultural trip to the small mountain village of Orvinio (pop. ~300) to dine, dance, and talk with its residents. Take a jaunt to Italy with the students through this short video.

Tips for Teaching

Watch this short video "Review Course Materials and Content Delivery" to learn how some instructors have changed their courses for synchronous and asynchronous delivery methods.

This video is part of the Remote Teaching Good Practices video series featuring interviews with Matt Delmont, Sherman Fairchild Distinguished Professor of History, Lorie Loeb, Research Professor and Faculty Director of DALI Lab, Jerry DeSilva, Associate Professor of Anthropology, Luke Chang, Assistant Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences, Eugene Korsunskiy, Assistant Professor of Engineering, and Caitlin Hicks Pries, Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences. Thank you to the interviewees for sharing their insights!

In case you missed last week's Teaching Remotely: Weaving Synchronous and Asynchronous Components in Your Course session, you can: New Faculty Guide to Teaching
This week is the New Faculty Orientation to Teaching. We'll share out material from the orientation and auxiliary sessions. For now, review the New Faculty Guide to Teaching at Dartmouth for FAQs and their answers.

Slack Integration in Canvas
If you would like to use a Slack workspace for your course this term, consider setting it up through our new Canvas tool. The first step for instructors is to add Slack to your Canvas course menu (in Canvas, click Settings → Navigation → drag Slack up to the top section → click Save), which will give you the link to create the workspace. Students will then be able to join the workspace by clicking the Slack link you’ve placed on the Canvas course menu. Read more with instructions here, or contact ITC for more information.

Student Name Pronunciation
This new tool allows students to record their names so that instructors are able to hear the pronunciation in the student’s own voice. You can access these recordings through the Photo Roster tool in your Canvas site. For additional reading, enjoy “Call Me By My Name. Here's How It's Pronounced” an OpEd by Roberto Rey Agudo, Language Program Director in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese,
