Hello again! The FCWP is wrapping up many of our 2020 warm season projects and transitioning to winter projects, and hopefully you are too! What a strange and challenging year it's been for all of us! Although we are all facing many challenges and life changes during these difficult times, I have been lucky enough to witness so many people showing patience and understanding. These people, who are often total strangers, make me proud to live here in Fremont County, WY. We know the challenges aren't over, but the compassion found within our community shows that we are resilient and able to face the challenges together as a community. We'll get past these times, and we'll be a stronger community because of them.
Now then, on to the real reason we're here...noxious weed management! With the late fall season comes another opportunity to manage a few different weed species found here in Fremont County, WY. Below are a couple examples of weeds that respond to late season control efforts, so take a look! The fall season is also a great time to take a look around your place and take a few notes about areas that may need some attention next spring. We all know that spring sneaks up on us, and before we know it the window for early season weed control slams shut! A little reminder note to yourself and maybe a quick phone call to the FCWP office to find out about the upcoming season programs and predictions, may become great tools for early season weed control!

Russian knapweed Acroptilon repens
Russian knapweed: This perennial weed is found throughout Fremont County, but has been declining due to hard work and very effective herbicides. Russian knapweed responds very well to specific herbicides during the fall season, even if the plants are beginning to go into a dormant phase. The FCWP does provide cost-share and technical assistance to landowners interested in controlling this invasive weed. It is often found in and along hay fields and does invade native rangelands. Give us a call for additional information about available programs and assistance at 307-332-1052.
Russian olive: These invasive trees are best controlled during the fall season, when the plant is carrying all available nutrients to the large root system for storage during the winter months. Root control is the key to successful Russian olive removal. Herbicides are available through FCWP. Give us a call with any questions!
Notice the alternating leaves and fruit that turn from olive green to brown on Russian olive trees. Please don't confuse Russian olive with Silver Buffaloberry! Buffaloberry is a native desirable found throughout Fremont County and has opposite leaves and orange to red berries (but may not form berries every season) If you're not sure, please give us a call and we will be glad to take a look!
For Certified Hay and Straw, please take a look at available sources by clicking this link! With hunting season upon us, please be sure to feed Weed Free Forage to your livestock a few days before and during your hunting adventure! Feeding weed-free forage a few days prior to traveling allows your stock to "flush out" any weed seeds that may have been ingested. Remember, prevention is the cheapest form of weed control. Please be sure to brush your livestock before you head to the mtns and also before you leave for home, clean your tack and pads,and always feed certified hay! Please don't shovel livestock waste out of your trailer until you get back home. Doing your part to help Wyoming's native environments stay healthy will benefit our future generations! Winter is almost here! Are you ready?
The winter season is approaching quickly! With days growing colder and the daylight becoming shorter, both desirable and undesirable vegetation will begin to die off or become dormant. Taking the time to find invasive weeds in the fall can be well worth your while! If plants are still green, there is generally still time to use herbicide on them. If the invasive weeds have already died and left dried seed structures like common burdock, houndstongue, spotted knapweed and Scotch thistle, cutting or pulling and bagging those seeds could save you years of headache down the road. Many types of seed will remain viable in the soil for decades, so anytime we can reduce the amount of available weed seed in an area we are helping to reduce the time-line of long-term negative impacts to currently infested lands, as well as limiting the potential for weed introduction into un-infested lands.
Just because the weeds aren't green doesn't mean we don't need to stay clean! Let's make sure we take care of our special places by cleaning our equipment, tack, livestock, pets, shoes, and vehicles both before and after an adventure into Wyoming's great outdoors. A little bit of effort goes a long way!
