New Member - Fresh Start
Edible Edinburgh are delighted to welcome our newest member to the partnership, Fresh Start, who have recently opened a community pantry. Speaking of their work, Business Manager, Carrie-Ann Scougall, said, "During this crisis, Fresh Start quickly adapted our services and began supplying food, cleaning and toiletry packs to those most in need and affected financially by Covid-19.  We realised we had to react, and quickly, to the ever growing need for food in North Edinburgh.  We fast tracked the opening of our Fresh Start Local Pantry at the end of June to allow those in the community to carry out their grocery shopping at a low cost, with dignity. The Pantry allows its’ members to get up to 10 grocery items per week for the low cost of £3.50.  There is no subscription required and members can use it as and when they need to.  There is a wide range of fresh, frozen and ambient foods available with ‘freebie extras’ regularly coming in from local businesses and bakeries.  The Pantry has been a great success so far, with membership almost full!  We have received some great feedback and look forward to offering new and exciting things to customers in the future."
Edinburgh Talks Climate
The City of Edinburgh Council and Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation have launched Edinburgh Talks Climate to facilitate conversation, engagement and collaboration around the climate emergency.  As part of the platform, Steve from Edinburgh Food Social and Hannah from Changeworks have spoken on a podcast about how we can make more sustainable choices around food. The City of Edinburgh Council would like to hear from people about the choices they have made, or how they have managed to reduce food waste. You can join in the discussion here and share your experiences and learn from others, to help explore the decisions we need to make together to live better and more sustainably.
Edinburgh Community Food Reduces Plastic Use
and Launches New Foodbox Project
Edinburgh Community Food have been working with suppliers to reduce the amount of plastic packaging used in their supply chain. Plastic wrapping has been removed from single and bulk items, which are now being grouped together in one large cardboard box. Their egg boxes are also 100% recyclable too. The organisation continues to work with suppliers to reduce its plastic use even further.

The Food & Health Development Team are rolling out phase 2 of a new Foodbox project, following a highly successful pilot with Dr Bell's Family Centre in Leith. The six week pilot programme provided six families with young children a personalised food box with fresh produce for a week, including ingredients to make a specific meals, basic cooking equipment and information leaflets and tablets for those experiencing digital exclusion. Staff from Dr Bell's and Edinburgh Community Food teamed up each week to deliver an interactive and fun live cooking session to the families, utilising the supplied ingredients, using a closed Facebook live group. This involved a cooking demonstration, how to use alternate ingredients, managing food waste, affordability and nutrition. Viewers could ask live questions throughout the session. Uptake was at 100% and the evaluation was universally positive, showing significant impact.
Edinburgh Food Social Meets Tommy Sheppard MP
Having recently launched the Good Food Apprenticeship at their new training hub at Castlebrae, the team at Edinburgh Food Social were delighted to meet with Tommy Sheppard MP to discuss Edinburgh’s food landscape, the COVID food response and food education amongst other things. It is clear that the inequalities in the system are there for all to see and that Edinburgh’s young people need to have the opportunity to engage more with growing and cooking. This was an incredibly positive meeting with lots of suggestions and interest shown by Tommy and lots to work on in the coming weeks and months to ensure that everybody has access to the nourishing, delicious food that they deserve
