Welcome Dr. Dan Ly to GIM Faculty
Dan Ly, MDDan Ly, MD, PhD, MPP, comes to us from Boston where he was an instructor at Boston University and lecturer at Harvard, where he also completed his PhD in Health Policy with a concentration in economics this past spring.  He was also an attending physician at the VA Boston Healthcare System.  His research has looked at at health care disparities and physician worklife issues.  He currently is focusing on physician behavior, particularly what influences physician testing and treatment behavior and the consequences of such behavior.  He brings with him a NRSA F32 fellowship with NIA, "Understanding how physician cognitive biases affect the treatment of older adults with dementia."  We welcome Dr. Ly and look forward to collaborating with him!

Dr. Art Gomez Named Inaugural Co-Director of
Foundations of Practice for DGSOM

Art Gomez, MDDr. Art Gomez  will serve as one of two inaugural Co-Directors of Foundations of Practice, a key component of DGSOM curricular redesign.  The other co-director is Dr. Peter Quiros, Associate Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology. Drs. Gomez and Quiros will assume overall leadership, oversight and delivery of this course, and will work closely with the cadre of 30 extraordinary Educators for Excellence (of which they are two). The Foundations of Practice course is a critically important component of the new curriculum—quite literally laying the foundation for our medical students by teaching the core skills of medical interview, physical examination, and clinical reasoning.

Dr. Gomez joined the faculty in 1994 and is Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Veterans Administration’s Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System and Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine training program at Cedars Sinai.  Dr. Gomez is a highly respected and decorated teacher and education leader, having won numerous teaching and research awards, mentored hundreds of pre-health, medical students, residents and fellows, and has distinguished himself in the areas of academic course development and student assessment. Dr. Gomez brings deep knowledge of medical education, health disparities and cross-cultural issues in medicine.

GIM-HSR Faculty Among “100 Women of Achievement”
Honored by UCLA Health

To mark Women’s Equality Day, August 26th , 2020, honoring the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, establishing women’s right to vote, UCLA Health identified 100 “Women of Achievement”.  UCLA acknowledged that although the passage of the 19th amendment granted all people the right to vote, discriminatory practices did not protect that right for Black Americans and other people of color, making the Voting Rights Act of 1965 necessary to begin to address systematic suppression of voting in the U.S.  The full list of awardees is here: UCLA Health 100 in 100 Women of Achievement

Congratulations to GIM-HSR faculty acknowledged for their achievements!
